I was also surprised. Two other Canadian towers got awards, Toronto's River City 3 and Calgary's Telus Sky.

If these buildings get awards, we know the kind of standard we have here. Also, Vancouver House isn't even a local design, but Danish.

At least it's not more taupe (popular among the painted concrete condo towers).
I also think that experiments with slight variations in spandrel or glass colour have failed - there wasn't enough contract in colour to be noticed, so the trend has veered to the most contrast possible.

Still prefer 1331 W Georgia.

This one is a very expensive example of a typical bi-polar Vancouver tower. All that money spent on the tower facade and they couldn't come up with anything more interesting than a glass/spandrel box for the part closest to the street. Also, it's just bad city-building to have a blank wall facing an adjacent "new" build that isn't going anywhere - they should've kept a bit of the podium 2 stories to line up with it, then they can have windows all around the 4-storey portion if there's a setback.

A historic art deco boardroom adds unique touch to sparkling new Vancouver tower

Quote:
...

But one of its most unique features can’t be seen from outside: the art deco boardroom on the fourth floor. The drop-dead-gorgeous mahogany panels were salvaged by Drew Ratcliffe’s family during the demolition of the Georgia Medical Dental Building in 1989.

Ratcliffe’s late grandfather, Arne Mathisen, had once owned the building, and when he sold it in 1971 he asked the new owner, Ron Shon, if he could have the boardroom if they ever tore it down.

“They had a handshake deal,” said Ratcliffe. “So sure enough that handshake deal came to fruition in ’89 when the phone rings. ‘Hey, the building’s coming down, come and get the board room.’

...

What does that have to do with anything?

Just think at all of the property taxes 620 Cardero is now generating.

And even more taxes if they don't find anyone to spend $13,800 to rent it. Vacant property taxes should kick in after a while.

Maybe they should create more more homes in Shaughnessy? See what happens when the zoning allows only single family? $26,800,000 on Tecumseu Ave Or 1487 Minto at $16,888,888 - six months on the market!

Shaughnessy has never been known as a site for affordable housing. However, I'd bet all three properties have one thing in common.

Neither has Coal Harbour! What's your point again?

Appreciate the neat article on the board room!

"...would not have been worth $245 million unless the developer knew they could build for foreign money"

I don't think the City can dictate to what group a condo is sold to.

The province gave the city the right to create rental only zones. All of the peninsula west of Burrard should be given such zoning to ensure adequate future rentals and to take the development pressure off the West End.

With literally one or two exceptions, all the only development sites that might be developed with housing west of Burrard are in the West End. Most of the likely future development sites for many years to come already have approved projects - there are only four projects that have been submitted, but not yet approved.

In the area near Thurlow and Burrard developers are already voluntarily switching from condo to rental. The market is already responding to the demand for rental, and limited sales of condos. The existing permits continue to apply, so any approved condo sites wouldn't be affected by a switch in policy.

I think this building applied for permits in like 2014 and the rental-only policy was enacted by the Province in 2018, and I think by the City in 2020, which included the West End to override portions of the West End Plan with more changes coming to the West End Plan within the Vancouver Plan.
