The "murals" on the Gordon Blg were previously vandalised with white paint and are now peeling off. Don't look to Harvard to pretty this up as they will want it to appear as an eyesore to helpo them with their demo permit application.

Right on!Looking forward to paying less for gas now. Why did it take them so long to get a gas bar there in the first place?

As for the social justice crowd, this is not the forum to start a debate on the merits of Saskatchewan's economic prosperity. Please find another forum for this topic.

Yep. Here's a visual for people. The old rail lines are clearly visible from Google Maps view of Rowatt south of town.

I respectfully disagree, Nathan. This is an issue that can only be solved locally, by Reginians. All residents have to acknowledge that there is institutionalized racism in Regina; take personal accountability to make it better, and require those around them to do the same.

This, coupled with investment in the community (bringing this thread back on track) such as the Mosaic Stadium redevelopment project, if done to lift the neighbourhood instead of continuing to concentrate poverty in North Central, will eventually turn things around in Regina's urban core.

On the Mosaic Stadium redevelopment project, what kinds of developments do *you* think are appropriate for this site?

Isn't the line on the right heading NE still there? I beleive we were referring to the old CPR line that ran from downtown along Arcola and HWY 33 to Richardson as having been removed.

Yeah, the east line is still there. The west line has been dug up past the Highway 6 crossover.

jw6969 was talking about how the Lewvan used to be a rail line so I was just commenting on that. I think someone else was talking about HWY33.

WTF why? There is no room there as it is. I absolutely hate that section of the city.

New LEDs in the trees on the Plaza. The skating surface will be near these.

I much rather go to the malls where I can park the car, go inside where it is warm and dry.

Aside from the Cornwall Centre, why can't Regina get a half decent mall? The Southland Mall has great potential with the library and movie theatres there already but they can't seem to get an anchor tenent in the old Wal Mart store. The Victoria Square hasn't had much to offer for a long time. The Golden Mile just keeps losing stores. I would like to see Regina open a new mall in the suburbs or renovate an existing one on the scale of the Cross Iron Mills mall in Calgary (or close to it). I understand the frustration with the big box store mess in the east end, but what other options are there in Regina?

I absolutely loathe the idea of suburban malls. What do you think kills downtowns?

We should be glad that Cornwall is still the destination shopping centre for Regina. Without it our downtown would really die off.

I think it would be great if they did some major renos and maybe even added a third floor to the Cornwall. Would really up its image I think.

Not going to happen. Retail in the form of indoor malls is a thing of the past. They are more expensive to operate than big box stores (which in themselves are failing in some places). A lot of malls across North America are being wiped out because this form of retail is no longer seen as an attractive or ideal option. Personally, Not really sure why you would want a new mall as further competition would only serve as a detriment to the existing.

Anyways, at the end of the day, no new mall is going to be built. On the contrary malls are having to reinvent themselves because they just aren't functional anymore. For an interesting discussion on this topic I would recommend Ellen Dunham-Jones video/book, "Retrofitting Suburbia"

The malls in Regina are terrible. The only time I go to a mall now is when I want to eat at Tim's sovlaki (can't remember what its actually called) in the golden mile. Haven't been to Saskatoon in a long time but I remember their malls having more life then ours. Calgary has some really good malls. Last time I was at the West Edmonton mall, 4 years ago, it looked like it was falling apart.

I can understand the trend away from indoor malls. You can see it in Regina with the current malls. They just seem to be dying a slow and painful death. But if this is the wave of the future, then perhaps centralizing shopping downtown at the Cornwall and a continued expansion of the big box stores in the east end and Harbor Landing are in order. If the smaller suburban malls are to die, then maybe the land they are on could be put to better use.

I wish the Cornwall had a parkade like Saskatoon. One giant flat level. I hate parking at the one on Sask drive. I also would like the Cornwall to not just expand but massively expand. Not sure how they could do that let alone financial aspect of it but ya.
