They have actually been working on it for about a week now, slowly but surely. I can see this out of my office, and they're usually only out there for a few hours so it will probably be another week or two before they're finally finished.

I wonder if it will be the blue color that was up for a couple of nights back last summer, did anyone get to see that?

I was going from the AAS article and AustinTowers. From Austin Towers,

"The hotel will break ground in 2009 and the condo tower is expected to break ground by 2010."
http://www.austintowers.net/Austin_Downtown/files/21c_hotel_condo_moves_to_waller_creek.html

and from the Statesman:

"Work is scheduled to start in early 2009 on a 16-story 21c Museum Hotel ... The hotel will be followed by a 49-story condominium tower with 295 residential units, and in the future, a 425,00-square-foot tower with offices and shops or more housing ... The company expects the hotel and condo towers to open in 2011."

http://www.statesman.com/search/content/business/stories/realestate/04/03/0403hotel.html

What is inferred to me is that best-case scenario, the Tower breaks ground in late 2009. But the skeptic in me reads 2010 at the earliest for the tower.

Austin needs a public observation tower now...

With all the new development going on downtown, I wish someone would build a tall observation tower in Austin, like the Space Needle in Seattle. Talk about a true city icon. Austin needs a place where the general public can go to take in the same view all the lucky condo and hotel dwellers get!

Hmm. If those lights are indeed outlining the crown making a ring of lights, then this could end up being very nice. With this and if they have some other flood lighting on the roof below the crown, it could be beautiful. 300 West Sixth actually had a more substantial lighting design early on. It had the ring lights like it does now, but it also had the barrel roof lit with flood lights. I loved it, but they did away with the flood lighting. 300 West Sixth isn't in a good enough location for its subdued lighting design to really make a difference and be noticed on the skyline. Since The Monarch is a bit more remotely located, and probably won't ever be blocked from view from the south, it should be a bit more noticeable.

I have always wanted an observation tower in Austin. When they were planning Town Lake Park I actually emailed several people there asking for one. I guess they had similar ideas, at least with realizing the view would be good since they have the observation hill.

Depending on where it was built, it wouldn't even have to be that tall. I would love to see an observation point on the site of that old abandoned house near the dog park on the northwest corner of Riverside and Interstate 35. It would just have to be tall enough to get above the treeline and you'd have some spectacular views of Austin.

What is happening at Red River and 38th, the small triangular patch of land separated from Hancock golf course? Staging for road work?

Yes, you are correct...I re-read the AAS article last night and both structures are slated to be delivered in 2011.

Also, be careful about the info. you get from AustinTowers...the site has several statistical errors and makes questionable analyses.

Seaholm redevelopment plan approved

www.bizjournals.com/austin

Thursday, April 10, 2008 - 3:00 PM CDT
Seaholm redevelopment plan approved
Austin Business Journal

Council approves more funding for ROMA Downtown Plan [Austin]
The Austin City Council approved the master development agreement for the $117.2 million Seaholm mixed-use redevelopment project today.

The agreement says the development group Seaholm Power LLP, led by Southwest Strategies Inc., will pay $98.6 million or 84 percent of the cost of the project, while the city will pay $18.6 million. The redevelopment plan calls for a 22-story hotel, 60 condo units, 130,000 square feet of office space and 50,000 square feet of retail and commercial space. The 150,000 square foot decommissioned power plant will be the centerpiece of the 7-acre property.

The city's contribution for the project, which will be raised through property and sales tax revenues, would pay for street and utility improvements, public parks and a parking garage. The city will continue to own the renovated Seaholm Power Plant on Cesar Chavez Street downtown.

Went by the Monarch tonite. I feel the lighting is too subdued. If any lighting is added to the crown, it will totally over power the current "LED" type lighting. I noticed one of the lights are malfunctioning on the north side. Let's hope its a work in progress.

Cool shots, Mopacs - but I can't imagine being the one to have go out on those balconies to put up the railing.

Video clip from Myfoxaustin.com of the redevelopment of Seaholm. They have some models of the area. One apparently shows the hotel/condo tower at Seaholm.

The Seaholm segment is in the 2nd half of the video.
