Uhh, maybe you misread what I was saying or pehaps I wasn't clear enough. I was listing the tallest buildings in Regina, and then went on to say that I wasn't sure of the ones in Saskatoon. My point was that there are only a handful of 20 plus floor buildings in Saskatchewan.

Upon closer inspection of the sewer upgrades near the Extra Foods site, it appears the sewer line goes directly into the credit union on the corner, potentially rendering my whole sewer line reasoning/rant moot. Oh well...

On the speculation side, what if the hotel we're hearing rumblings about is a Marriot? They put in a bid for the south downtown project and also recently opened a call centre here. Perhaps they still want to get into the Saskatoon market.

Would Mariot do a mixed use hotel/residential building? or just a hotel?

A Mariott would be a good fit. With the recent addition of extra nodes at the Synchrotron and the added convention space at TCU, and the new $300 million+ health sciences center being built, I think the city can definately handle some more high end hotel rooms. If you check the occupancy downtown, the Sheraton, Delta, and Radisson are consistantly over 90%. I am not sure about the Hilton, but for them to come to the city, there must be a demand for upscale brands.

Also - it would be nice if they modeled the riverfront market facility after Eau Claire, as that would draw even more people to live in the core of the city.

Meridian

OK - I just spoke with Karl Miller at Meridian - He said that they are inundated with calls for information, and that a press release will be made by September, regarding a confirmed 17 storey tower, breaking ground in late August, with occupancy by Christmas 2007. They will have conceptual drawings in mid to late August.

Excellent news, good work Stewie. Why would they have a press release after breaking ground?

No clue - maybe he meant they are demolishing the building and preparing the site in August, then the press release??? It's just nice to know that it is coming!

Well I told you that already, but no one would beleive me. Bastards. But this is very exciting. I guess the height changes every day! Yesterday, according to Meridian, it was 18. I cannot wait to see renderings/construction begining. Now if they would just anounce that Extra Foods site...

Also, I checked Obasa's website. No mention of Tower 21... Do these companies NOT want people to buy their condos, or what? A sign on the street is great, but what about floor plans, pricing, details of any kind???

Wow, talk about a flurry of activity since I last checked this thread. Nice to see alot of information rolling out. Also, big thanks to circle33 and swilley for posting updated pictures of the construction progress.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if the Credit Union (currently stands on the corner of 22nd and 3rd Avenue) is still going to be there once the new Affinity Credit Union is completed and opened? Are they possibly going to amalgamate the two together, or leave the seperate?

Cool

Actually, Saskatoon Credit Union (3rd & 22nd) and Affinity Credit Union are two seperate entities. Affinity Credit Union is the product of the recent merger of Page Credit Union (in Sturdy Stone) and Saskatchewan Valley Credit Union in Rosthern, Hague, etc. and there are no plans for a merger.

As for the Meridian link - I have heard rumors that a credit union will be a main floor tenant of the Meridian on Broadway, but this is only a rumor.

There was only one bid for the south downtown site, and IT WAS NOT "Marriot". If remember correctly, the city only had one decision to make. Do we approve the Remai Ventures Inc proposal or not. Not sure where you get your information from.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see a "Marriot" on that site. But I think you are getting carried away.

I remember something about the Marriott, I think they submitted an expression of interest in the earlier planning days, but there was some detail or restriction that got in the way of them actually submitting a proposal. I think it was too many restrictions on design imposed by the city, and not enough tax incentives.

I could be wrong - but I definately remember some mention about a possible Mariott in the city. I will try to dig something up about this.

The original expression of interest produced several proposals: one from the "GIG" or Gathercole Initiative Group, one from Ken Achs, one from Marriott and one from Remai. The city eventually choose Remai, though when they released the design of the building, council and the public at large were totally underwhelmed, which lead to the redesign (forthcoming) and the delay. There are more details to what happened, and I may has some things not quite right, but that's the basics. Marriott definitely had a south downtown proposal.
