Perhaps as a more expensive, upscale store, being a U of O student short-cut was not as appealing as it was for Sears....

while I've enjoyed that entrance as a shortcut from Sandy Hill into the mall, it never really made sense for the store

I would think for a store it is a question of trading off revenue from impulsive spending vs security and a wet and dirty floor.

Quite shocking. Most stores would love to have that many people walking through their store. Most purchases are done on impulse. I'm still shocked.

It sure looks like it. Not that it is necessary anyway, they probably want more traffic into the food court and are using that corner for operations.

For comparison, all the other Nordstrom Canada stores;

http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=211996&p=irol-mediakitCanada

And each individual city/mall;

Calgary Chinook Centre;

Toronto Yorkdale;

Toronto Sherway Gardens;

Vancouver Pacific Centre;

And of course Ottawa's Rideau Centre;

I think Ottawa's actually my favourite. I was afraid they would half ass it, you know, because we're Ottawa, but I'm impressed.

They don't have to half-ass it, Ottawa's is already the most simplistic exterior renovation of the bunch. They only have to rejuvenate one face of the building here.

Vancouver is quite complicated, but I would say that there is more work to be done in Ottawa then there is in Calgary.

Back to Ottawa, I hope they also put in some work on the other 3 façades. They could be forgiven for doing minimal work to the Nicholas face since it will be a common wall to a future expansion or tower of sorts, but if we plan on improving the experience on the roof top terrace, something needs to be done with the façades as well as the big black glass pyramids Having an entrance up there might be cool.

I second it - in my opinion Ottawa's one is the most intresting design: simple and classic not aging with time (like Vancouver's version)

The proposed design changes very little, except for a bit more glazing up top, and less ground floor glazing, pretty much just lipstick.

Love the rendering and the missing Transitway stop, buses, etc. What will happen to the stop once the LRT is finished?

I vote for Vancouver's as it is a more holistic approach to dealing with a bomb shelter commercial aesthetic which characterizes the Sear's/Eaton's at Pacific Centre.

In case anyone is curious check out the 6th floor of the Bay to see retail with natural light, it's actually a great retail space.

It looks like the integrated transit shelter is still there on the left hand side... the rendering shows folks standing around or sitting inside the glass.

My understanding was that when the LRT is completed, buses that currently use Rideau like the 2, 7, etc. would switch over to Mac Bridge.

I have never been on the 6th floor, but It seems HBC is wasting one of the buildings best features (the windows giving us natural light) by covering them up on every other floor.

There's a presentation on the Rideau Centre at next week's NCC board meeting. Perhaps we will see renders.

That's weird? How is the Rideau Centre to the NCC? When is the meeting anyway?

I don't see the application online yet, but apparently they have filed it:

http://www.obj.ca/Real-Estate/Non-reside...37/Rideau-Centre-files-expansion-plans/1

-28 new stores
-Food court to the bottom of sears
-Nordstrom above the food court.
-New major entrance off rideau
-237,883 square feet of new retail space
-375 new parking spaces added as part of a new three-storey underground garage
-at grade access to stores along Rideau

The article doesn't mention the rumoured hotel or residential component along Nicholas or whether they're making renovations to the interior of the existing part of the mall.

I still think a large new hotel is needed (the couple hundred rooms proposed around the downtown are great (Alt on Slater (148), Re on Queen/Sparks(110), Hyatt(158) in the market), but they won't solve the Convention Centre's big problem which is accommodating it's guests in the fewest amount of hotels. When you look at the other big cities in Canada, their Convention facilities have exponentially more hotel rooms directly adjacent to their buildings. I recommend at least another 500 rooms over the old registry office. See link below (click the dots on the map, of the big 6, we only beat Calgary in adjacent hotel rooms);

http://www.conventioncentrescanada.com/members_centres/members_start.html

On another note, the OBJ article also talks about fixing up the skywalks, the Rideau and (as we have already seen) the Mack Bridge as well as connections to the subway.
