I have to ask, is the joint between the existing VHFC docks and the Harbour Air docks a permanent feature, or something that will be adjusted later?

Also, how is the Seawall integration project going?

I was wondering as well how different the sea wall will look once the refurbishment of it is completed.?
It should be done in a few weeks if not already.

It wasn't open yesterday, although there were grumblings that there may be a soft opening today...not exactly a patio day.

Yes. I think somewhat smaller lettering would look better, not just for the restaurant, but for the entire plaza. Keep in mind, the same-sized lettering also runs down the other edge (facing the Olympic cauldron). But either way, the restaurant will definitely bring more energy to the area and there should be a nice buzz during the summer when the patio is in full swing.

I thought it'd be similar to their Burrard and Dunsmuir location where they have their patio heaters running full blast all year, and rain covers.

It will, I was just implying they wouldn't get much walkup traffic today. I spoke too soon anyway regarding the weather!

Cactus club opens today and they'll be lighting the torch as well. Full details on http://www.vancitybuzz.com/. First story and they have a few interior shots. Really nice.

Interesting to see they enclosed what was originally going to be a west facing patio.

Looks gorgeous, but I'm guessing it is way too large and expensive to survive long-term. When I think of Cactus Club, I think of a noisy restaurant that took over a vacant Denny's building, not a high-end restaurant in a waterfront location.

According to their website, this area will be a “sea-to-sky terrace with retractable glass wall for open-air dining..." : http://www.cactusclubcafe.com/2013/0...-coal-harbour/

So I wonder if that means just the west-facing vertical wall retracts or the entire glass structure, creating a true open-air patio.

You must not have visited a Cactus Club in a while. This chain has become the leading casual/upscale restaurant in the city. They command the very best iconic locations downtown, including a new purpose-build at English Bay right on the water. It'll survive, and thrive, I'm sure.

I agree. This place will likely be like a license to print money, it's got it all: AAA location, views, familiar brand name, convention and hotel guests nearby, not a lot of competition in the area, etc. etc.

I bet one entity is not super jazzed about this opening though, The Mill Marine Bistro & Bar, 160 metres to the west of this.

I just noticed in the 1st and 2nd photo above that the old and ugly floating shack (which used to be a part of the old seaplane docks) appears to be staying and is now a permanent fixture to the extra addition to the new seaplane docks.

If that's the case, then the clean aesthetics of the new docks are being ruined even more than they were when the extra dock was awkwardly grafted on to the original new docks.

Can anyone confirm that this is the case? Or have they not yet fully towed away the old docks?

wow, that's a really really nice plaza. great shots. it's a shame that there isn't way more in the way of commercial down there to get people into the space, it's cold out, but there isn't a single person there. too lovely a space to go so unused. the resto space is nice too, though i personally dislike that red robin-style resto bar with benches and bar seats and googie-style booths. amazing views of the water and inlet.

A huge missed opportunity was 3 HG not having any commercial in it's base. A restaurant/bar would have been great on the corner with the plaza.
