How can the Dakota claim what was ceded in Treaty One and is outside their traditional territories? They claim the Forks are traditional Sioux land. My understanding is that the Winnipeg area was mainly Ojibway, Cree and Assiniboine but can anyone correct me on that? According to a separate CBC article they want majority control of the Forks land, profits and final say on all grants, leases, licences or permits

It's such an absurd claim my guess is they're looking for an out-of-court settlement.
I'd be interested in knowing who's actually driving this; the Indigenous communities or some non-Indigenous lawyers who've seen an opportunity to rake in some top-flight legal fees.
I'm no scholar regarding treaties, but I'm guessing the actual Treaty 1 signatories would have something to say about this, and probably not favourable.
It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.
