Only one thing, I wish they would remove the white balconies and either the red or the yellow, it just seems like there is so much going on.

My main criticism of this project is the apparent complet lack of integration with the street. There is literally a wall surrounding the terrasses with a small lawn and suburban still sidewalks all around. Hopefully the city will address this.

I think in the next year or two the city is supposed to do a complete upgrade to queen street, so hopefully we will see some changes! If not I'm sure that will be a concern that comes up at some point. Rumour is that this is not the final render.... The Wesley sign, the realtor sign and the restaurant sign all look out of place... So there is bound to be some changes.

It will be interesting to see if this Spurs any new development on that end of downtown, because honestly it will look really out of place of it doesn't haha!

Great to hear about the Gahan House. i eat there just about every time I'm in Charlottetown. Great craft beer. Between this and the Pump House just down the lane, we're going to have a bit of a craft beer precinct in the neighbourhood!

Great to hear Gahan house will be coming to Moncton. I enjoy PEI Brewing's beer and visit there multiple times per year, whenever I am on the Island. Let's hope more places like this spring up soon.

New Hilton in Moncton

I heard from a representative of a local commercial real estate services company that a Hilton Hotel is in fact will be built in Tannery Village but not on the corner of Main St. and Vaughan Harvey Blvd. It is to be built at the corner of Vaughan Harvey and the street that Sobey's in located on, diagonally to Shopper's Drug Mart.

I hope that they build it, it would be a huge change to the area to see the "tannery" get started! It's an extremely enticing area to live, right near restaurants and bars, directly across the street from the grocery store, minutes to the new arena, easy access to riverview, only minutes from the waterfront trails and a quick drive to both hospitals. I think people, especially seniors would really consider loving there.

I would have preferred that it be built on the corner of Main & Vaughan Harvey, but we'll see what transpires here.

In any event, your conversation with this real estate person serves as further confirmation that a Hilton hotel is planned for the Junction (Tannery) Village development.

Just think how exciting the next few years will be in greater Moncton. The list of projects under construction, planned or rumoured continues to grow:

- Downtown Events Centre
- Hilton at Tannery Village (possibly a Garden Inn), not to mention the rest of this urban village too
- Sobeys Extra at Main & Vaughan Harvey
- Aquillini block (Crowne Plaza)
- proposed multistorey commercial residential building on the SE corner of Main And Highfield, across from the events centre
- FiveFive Queen
- Downing Street redevelopment
- new Codiac Police HQ (a $45M development)
- MH35 project (old MHS)

And this is all just in the downtown core! There's at least another 6-8 sizeable projects elsewhere in the metro area, like the Holiday Inn & Suites plaza on Mapleton at the TCH.

It's going to be hard to keep up!

Here is the press release sent to my email today by FiveFive, it is now a go, does anyone think it will draw enough conversation to have its own thread, or should we just leave it alone in the downtown thread for now.

Quote:
Moncton, NB ----- A long awaited condominium project in downtown Moncton is moving ahead the developers announced on Wednesday. Five Five Queen will be a combination of condominiums, a boutique hotel, a restaurant and commercial space and will sit on land behind Moncton’s city hall.

“We are pleased to announce the project is a go and that construction will commence this fall,” Nick Spataro of Spataro Holdings said to a full-house in the lobby of the Capitol Theatre. “Over the last three years we have worked to define the best vision for Five Five Queen to ensure it was a project that all Monctonians would be proud of and that would enhance our city,” Spataro said. “We are very proud to introduce this Condo/Boutique Hotel property, the first of its kind in New Brunswick.”

Joining Spataro Holdings as developers of the project are ELCE Developments owned by Bill Hennessey and Serge DiBonaventura. “We are pleased that two Moncton based development companies could come together on this exciting new project for our downtown,” Spataro said.

The eight story building will consist of 43 condominiums on floors 5 through 8, with the condos ranging in size from 650 to 2400 square feet. The property will include a new downtown boutique hotel named The Wesley which will consist of 75 rooms on floors 2 through 4. The hotel will be operated by the Murphy Hospitality Group (MHG) from Prince Edward Island. MHG currently operate The Great George and The Hotel on Pownal in Charlottetown.

The Gahan House, a 6000 square foot restaurant, will occupy the main floor. This will be MHG’s third Gahan House, with two very successful restaurants already operating in Halifax and Charlottetown.

“Everything that is happening in Moncton with a renewed focus on the downtown including the building of the new multi-use sports and entertainment centre make this the right time for our group to bring our very successful Gahan House brand to Moncton and create a quality boutique hotel in the heart of the city,” Kevin Murphy, President of MHG said. “Moncton is a great city that is on the move and we are excited to be part of the future.”

Value of the project is $20 million and is estimated to take 18 months to complete. All condominium sales and leases will be managed by Platinum Atlantic Realty www.PlatinumAtlanticRealty.com

Eight stories is more than I expected. Given the small footprint (relatively), I think it's gonna be a great addition!

Danny Murphy (MHG) also owns the Hampton on Mapleton, he is the PEI franchisee of Tim's & Wendys, I believe he also owns the holiday inn express in Charlottetown & Saint John, so this is a huge deal for Moncton, he is actually the kind of person I like to see running this hotel!

That's always a tough call Monctoncore. It really depends on how much chatter you think a particular project will generate, as well as the relative importance of the project. If it doesn't generate enough interest, the thread will drop off the bottom of the page. For example, the [Saint John] Moosehead Microbrewery thread that was creating is surely going to drop off the bottom. The [Moncton] MH35 Project thread might also do the same, but might survive because it is politically controversial.

You can create the thread if you wish, anyone can do so - just use your own judgement.

Nothing overly exciting but snapped a photo of the repurposed tuttle bros funeral home building with the Fidelis Law Signage.

The Elle Mio sign has been installed over the storefront next to Colpitts.

Also, Drake Personnel Search has (finally) installed their sign over their location next to Stile.

These are little things to be sure, but can go a long way towards giving the downtown a more lively appearance.

I can confirm that either one of the two renders below will be the final configuration for the Sobeys Extra plaza at Main and Vaughan Harvey.

I know the owners of the Shoe Tree, and they confirmed that they and the Goodlife for Women locations are staying put. Originally, Sobeys had wanted to put their freezer units along the north wall of the store but the city planning department wanted to keep the fenestration ratio along Main Street. They hit an impasse, so Sobeys decided to expand to the south instead, which means that they no longer needed the Shoe Tree and GoodLife space.

This is a better solution anyway. It's good to keep commercial storefrontage along Main Street.

FWIW, I like version one of the render above better than version two.......

According to Retail Talk & Share on Facebook, they say that Navigators is moving to the old Moncton Ale House location (building permit in the window).

A contact of mine said that the lease was up at Navigator's old location and that the landlord was planning on an outlandishly higher rent bordering on usury, hence the move.........

City of Moncton press release:

Quote:
Public Consultation – Victoria Park Fountain Replacement
July 12, 2016

MONCTON – The City of Moncton invites all residents to a public consultation meeting on Thursday, July 14 at Victoria Park (175 Park Street) at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the proposed fountain replacement. In the case of inclement weather, the meeting will take place at Moncton City Hall (655 Main Street.) Comments may also be submitted online at moncton.ca until July 31, 2016.

The current fountain is over 50 years old and at the end of its serviceable life. There will be a brief presentation followed by an opportunity to share feedback one on one with staff.

Over the past few decades, the fountain has been the backdrop to thousands of photographs for weddings, family reunions and proms. The City of Moncton invites the community to consider all four seasons while providing their feedback for the replacement of the fountain.

The City thanks residents for their participation during consultations.
You can give your input by commenting on the web form available here:
http://www.moncton.ca/Residents/Recreati...ntain_Replacement.htm?platform=hootsuite

They are seeking to replace this:

With either one of the two options below:

Quote:
Victoria Park Fountain Replacement

The proposed options for the fountain replacement are designed to meet the following objectives:

Historic appropriateness
The fountain is a permanent feature of the park located on the axis of several walkways. It acts as a visual element four seasons of the year and as a destination for social interaction. The proposed fountain details are based on historic precedence from the Victorian era. This includes an ornate center piece surrounded by detailed paving.

Interactive
The fountain floor is designed for people to approach the fountain center piece and touch the water which falls from the piece to the ground. The fountain also includes ground jets that spurt randomly creating interest and opportunity for interaction.

Water conservation
The water system includes aerated jets to maximize the visual effect using as little water as possible. The main fountain will be installed to run from dawn to dusk and the ground jets will be activated by the user.

I love the second option but it seems to be missing something. It might just be me personally but when fountains are siting directly on the ground it seems like it's missing a base.
