Moncton though does cater to the wine lovers, with Duo, third glass and quite a few others along with winery's. I'm sure the craft brew will become more popular, it's just something that lacks right now.

There was an excavator breaking ground at the new "zios" today at lunch. Finally under way possibly.

If you guys are looking for another great location for craft brew, don't forget to check out the Laundromat Expresso Bar on St. George. My last time in, they had Acadie Broue and Celtic Knot on tap... Plus tons of bottled options. Plus plus, great espresso coffees.

That actually where we ended up, have always liked the laundromat, it just at the moment seems off the beaten path from everyone else. I think if there was more infill inbetween Main and st. George, shops, bars, restaurants it would be more attractive to travel by foot at night. St. George will soon see more development I'm hoping. But I would love more infill between the two streets so that it is mor pedestrian friendly.

Dr. Sheldon Rubin retired today. He was the first oncologist in NB and had a long and storied career at the Moncton Hospital.

The Minister of Health (Victor Boudreau) was there and he formally announced that the new oncology clinic at the Moncton Hospital (which was opened last year) will be officially named the Dr. Sheldon Rubin Oncology Clinic.

It appears The Junction (or a part thereof) has a new name: Tannery Village

http://www.smycorp.com/tannery-village.html

I don't know anything about their business aside from what I've just read on their website. It appears that this project is the only one under their umbrella outside of Ontario & BC.

The page lists specifications for a 4-storey retail & residential building, with indoor parking, retail & shared amenities on the first floor, and 36 units on the top 3 floors. It would be located at the corner of Vaughan Harvey & Ivan Rand but doesn't state on which side (north or south). No map and no renders we haven't seen before.

Verbatim from the page linked above:

Smycorp has partnered with three other investors including a former Moncton resident and an experienced local developer in purchasing land in Moncton, New Brunswick with the intention of developing an urban village on the former CN owned lands. The 11-acre property, located at the corner of Vaughn Harvey Blvd. and Main Street was purchased for $1.65 million in December 2013. Preliminary design and engineering is underway to ensure everything is in place to start development. The proposed renderings for The Junction/Tannery Village can be seen below, along with the proposed building aspects.

BUILDING -4 floors with retail and 36 residential 2-bedroom units (approx. 1,200 sq.ft. each)
-1st floor – in-door parking space for 36 cars, exercise room, lobby, storage room, retail space (on the intersection side)
-Floors 2, 3, 4 – 12 units per floor (6 facing Vaughan Harvey and 6 facing Ivan Ran Drive)
-To be competitive, the building will probably be built in wood, with PVC windows(nice style, size and colors)
-Use warm finishes such as wood with accent of brick or stone
-Balconies
-On slab (no basement)
-Minimum 9 feet ceilings RETAIL -1 or 2 retail tenants (approx. 7,000 sq.ft. minimum)
-Try end cap 2,000 sq.ft. suite for a cafe (with end cap drive thru if possible)
-Minimum of 5 public parking spaces for each 1,000 sq.ft. of retail space available RESIDENTIAL UNITS -Each unit to be approx. 1,200 sq.ft. with 2 bedrooms
-Contemporary design Master bedroom to have full in-suite bathroom and walk-in closet
-Living room and master bedroom windows to be large and loft-like-Individual heat-pumps

By the looks of it, it may be the first part of the puzzle... Sounds like they are going to start with the GoodLife and this 4 storey building and then work their way to the corner. I hope that they build it, it would be a huge change to the area to see the "tannery" get started! It's an extremely enticing area to live, right near restaurants and bars, directly across the street from the grocery store, minutes to the new arena, easy access to riverview, only minutes from the waterfront trails and a quick drive to both hospitals. I think people, especially seniors would really consider loving there.

There appear to be plans afoot to redevelop the old Centennial/Shakers property on St George Blvd (finally).

The following is a proposal before the Moncton June PAC meeting:

The plan is apparently for a small commercial building fronting St George where Centennial/Shakers is now (possibly a renovation), with a four storey apartment building in behind, facing on Jones Lake.

The apartment building may appear to be yet another underwhelming generic four storey building that we see all too often in Moncton, but at least it seems to be sans vinyl siding, has underground parking, and has an interesting facade facing the lake.

In any event, it will be good to see this property getting redeveloped.

Updated rendering showing what the Sobeys Extra and the attached NBLC at Main and Vaughan Harvey will look like.

This is the first render to show the facade of the new NBLC.

This render seems to show the Shoe Tree back in it's original location. I don't know whats up with that........

It appears that the Sobeys will be expanding into the current liquor store space, and that the liquor store will simply be shuffling over. There was actually 2 different options on the PAC document aswell, this this was the more expensive one (option two), and the other was cheaper (option one). Notice the extra expansion on the sides of the entry area in option one.

Usually I don't like this kind of development, but considering its location on St. George Bvld. I'll take it! After all, its not the nicest looking area of town.

Bylaws require windows facing Main St. Sobeys had requested a variance to allow faux windows instead (due to freezers on the north end of the building), which the city refused IIRC, so leaving the Shoe Tree in place is likely easier and cheaper than other alternatives.

Definitely a renovation. The second picture you posted says 'existing building', and its shape as seen from above is the same as Google Maps.

GoodLife for Women is likely staying put too. They new one will be a relocation of the other Main Street GoodLife.

If Shoe Tree and GoodLife for Women are staying put, this is really a good thing. These two businesses give this development a presence on Main Street which is certainly a better alternative than a blank wall.

I presume that if the Sobeys expansion is now southward, then the first step will be to build the new NBLC on the south end of the plaza, followed later by a reconstruction of the former NBLC space to accommodate the expanded Sobeys footprint.

I see there is heavy equipment digging up the area next to the Staples on Main Street at the Harper Lane site. Might just be soil remediation, but might be something else... finally...

It's kinda interesting you say that considering it was called The Golden Mile many years ago. Some of the top employers in Moncton were located on that stretch of road. GM, Chrysler, Imperial Tobacco and ALC just to name a few. I guess any area can turn downward at some point and probably will.

Well, you know the motto around here - Resurgo!

The loss of those employers on that particular strip is difficult, but St George Blvd still looks nice, and many of the buildings have been repurposed (e.g. Allsco). The street will most definitely bounce back. This Centennial/Shakers project will mean a lot to the neighbourhood.

It will be huge for the neighbourhood which is why I'll support it, but if that same building was on say gorge road or Ryan road I wouldn't be as supportive.

I was talking to a buddy of mine who is constantly trying to push these types of projects because they are positive for an area like the West end of Saint George street, and he's been notified there where already several people who want to fight against it. Only time will tell how many people will really be against it, and if there reasoning is as dumb as what my buddy has heard over, and over. I for one do support this project I just wish there where more projects in this area.
