The bit around Pearson is a mess. I've ridden a car out of there probably like 5 or 6 times and we got lost at least two of those times.

Wow the rebuilt of the Métropolitaine-Décarie interchange is impressive, if not more than the one in Toronto!

Is it really necessary to have controlled access up there?

It's an urban freeway, not inter urban. The inter urban portion isn't controlled access I don't think, only dual carriageway.

Controlled access refers to any method to control traffic, including a highway with level crossings and traffic lights. I think you're referring to grade separation.

That's just a diamond interchange you're seeing there. Fort McMurray's first trombone interchanges were just opened recently. That road is mainly at-grade and not even controlled as many intersections don't have lights. They simply seem to have put in whatever was most adequate for traffic levels.

Given the layout of Fort Mac and how fast it's growing I'd say it is necessary. Although I believe it's a hybrid type with interchanges at major points and lights at others. This is a very Albertan concept I have found.

And the highest capacity interchange in the greater Vancouver area would have to be the Cape Horn interchange in Coquitlam. This render is the only good shot I could find.

I eagerly await the day Vancouver gets a real stack interchange.
Is the Mary Hill /Lougheed Interchange not considered a stack interchange?

Going to guess you've never been judging from this comment. It's definitely needed. This is the only road through town, and on to all the work sites around the area north of fort mac. Very heavy traffic during the shift changes, coupled with tons of truck/trailer traffic and w/ large oversized loads

re: Fort Mac

Because of the topography there are only a couple of ways in and out of the neighbourhoods to the north of the core. Before the interchanges there were massive three-lane wide left turn lanes.

Near the core the highway is at grade with a by-pass for southbound traffic, at least the last time I was there, before the new bridge was built. Not sure what the plans are for this section, but it was quite busy around shift changes.

What I meant was limited access.

Re: everyone else

Makes sense, lots of truck traffic, fast growing population.

The snow can't be the only reason.

Every time I take the cab in from Trudeau to Montreal, I'm amazed at the general dilapidated nature of its highways and suburban built form in general. It has to be the most depressing suburban landscape in the country.

Highway 720 will be completely rebuilt with Turcot.

Décarie, highway 40-25 are not ''dilapidated''

the Interchange highway 15-40 is brand new. Décarie Interchange as well.

they will repair the Tunnel in 2017.
New Champlain bridge in 2018

yes Turcot is shite, 1966.

I believe there are larger interchanges in Toronto than the one posted. The one that was posted is more chaotic looking than anything.

Here's a the largest interchange in Canada: The 401/403/410 junction.

Photos by me

And it's planned to get a couple more connections:

The 401 / 427 is probably the largest in Toronto in sheer size:

every interchange in Toronto:

Could almost fit another Toronto (at least a bunch of Rob Fords) into the space occupied by all those interchanges.

In addition to making the 401/403/410 interchange support full movements, I believe they are also making the 403/QEW interchange support full movements. The 401/403/410 interchange has also changed since the air photo with the collector-express system continuing west of it.

Oh yes I forgot about that, I should have used the newer imagery. (the darker imagery) I used it where there have been changes.. (409 / 401 was in the middle of construction in the standard images and you can see the UPX spur half built in the 427 / 409 / airport image)
