Canadian forward Cyle Larin scores 4 in memorable outing for Turkey's Besiktas
25-year-old from Brampton, Ont. now tied for Turkish scoring lead
Neil Davidson The Canadian Press Jan 06, 2021

Canadian forward Cyle Larin was near unstoppable Wednesday, scoring four goals for Turkey's Besiktas in a 6-0 victory over visiting Caykur Rizespor in Istanbul.

The 25-year-old from Brampton, Ont., upped his season goals total to 10, moving into a tie for the Turkish scoring lead with Gabon's Aaron-Salem Boupendza, who plays for Hatayspor.

Veteran Canadian midfielder Atiba Hutchinson, given the day off by Besiktas, watched Larin put on a show in the first home game of the year at Vodafone Park

Larin opened the scoring for the Black Eagles in the 19th minute, taking a pass from a teammate at midfield and sending the ball ahead before steaming towards the penalty box. Two passes later, a sliding Larin tapped the ball in from close range after finding a hole in the defence.

Larin made it 2-0 in the 31st minute, taking advantage of a Rizespor's defender poorly weighted attempt to head the ball back to his goalkeeper. The Canadian got to the ball first and chipped it over the 'keeper.

Larin started and finished Besiktas' fourth goal in the 79th minute, pressuring a Rizespor defender who was hoping his goalkeeper would come for the ball as it headed toward the penalty box. The defender and goalkeeper collided, allowing Larin to poke the ball in.

Larin profited from another defensive blunder in the 83rd, intercepting an errant pass and slotting the ball past the onrushing Rizespor 'keeper to increase the lead to 5-0.

Oguzghn Ozyakup and Ajdin Hasic also scored for Besiktas, which sits atop the Turkish Super Lig standings at 11-4-1. Rizespor stands 12th at 5-6-5.

Larin has won 31 caps for Canada, including 19 starts, with eight goals.

Selected first overall by Orlando in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft, the University of Connecticut product won rookie of the year honours with a 17-goal campaign. His total remains an MLS rookie scoring record.

He added 14 goals in 2016 and 12 in 2017 before becoming embroiled in a messy divorce with Orlando. MLS initially resisted Larin's bid to move to Europe, arguing he was under contract through 2019.

The transfer was eventually agreed to in January 2018. Larin, one of a long line of talented players to emerge from Sigma FC of Mississauga, Ont., left MLS with 43 goals in 87 games.

Larin was loaned out to Belgium's SV Zulte Waregem, but returned to Besiktas last June.

US dropped Canada 1-0 last night in the first match of the SheBelieves Cup, CWNT's first match in nearly a year, and first under new manager Bev Priestman. It's Canada's 52nd overall loss to the US in 62 matches, and Canada has not beaten the US in 20 years (March 11, 2001 was CWNT's last win over the US).

I've always liked Cyle Larin's game and not just because he's from my hometown. TFC has Ayo Akinola, another Brampton guy, and he reminds me of him, but Larin has more finesse to his game. Glad to see he's doing well. And glad to see David has picked things up after a wretched start with Lille.

Brampton is definitely #1 for producing the most players, but like basketball (Stevie Nash), the best player of them all is from way far away, in Edmonton (Alphonso Davies of course). Though right now I still consider Julian de Guzman the greatest Canadian player of all time. That is, until Davies plays a few more years and then will surpass him in my mind.

Canada Soccer Announces Men’s National Team Roster for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Qualifiers
The two matches will kick off the road to Qatar 2022

Canada Soccer have announced the Men’s National Team roster for the opening matches of its FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Qualifiers campaign. Canada is preparing to host Bermuda on Thursday 25 March at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, FL, USA before facing Cayman Islands on Sunday 28 March at the IMG Sports Complex in Bradenton, FL, USA. The two matches will kick off the road to Qatar 2022 and mark a highly anticipated return to competitive match action for Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team following an extended break due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

“The squad selection shows the commitment of the players, how they feel about these games, representing Canada and how important the games are for the country, said Head Coach John Herdman. “Having been apart for so long, we’re focused on being able to connect and ensuring we get the tactical clarity over the short window we have leading into the start of qualifying. It’s about the off-field connection and getting the guys comfortable being together again.”

Both matches in the March FIFA window will be played in closed-door environments and will be broadcast live on OneSoccer with the Canada-Bermuda match set to kick off at 20.00 ET / 17.00 PT and Canada-Cayman Islands at 16.00 ET / 13.00 PT. Fans will find extended coverage across Canada Soccer’s digital channels on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube featuring the hashtag #CANMNT.

Canada Soccer recently announced that it would host the opening match of its Qatar 2022 qualifying campaign against Bermuda on 25 March at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, FL, USA. The venue is familiar to Canada Soccer’s National Teams as the Men’s National Team trained and played at the stadium in November 2019 as part of Concacaf Nations League A and most recently it was the site of the She Believes Cup featuring the Women’s National Team.

“While we would have loved to be playing at home where we have been very difficult to beat, what we’ve been able to do here in Orlando is control the conditions so that our players can impose our approach to the match,” said Herdman.

Canada has been drawn into Group B with Aruba, Bermuda, Cayman Islands and Suriname as part of the First Round of the Concacaf FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Qualifiers and will face each nation once, playing a total of four matches in this stage, with only the group winner advancing to the Second Round. Following its March matches, Canada is scheduled to face Aruba on 5 June and host Suriname on 8 June. In all, 30 Concacaf nations are competing across six groups in this First Round.

From the First Round of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Qualifiers, the Group B winner will face the Group E winner in a Second Round, head-to-head series on 12 and 15 June 2021. The winner from that Second Round then advances to the Concacaf Final Round of eight nations scheduled to begin in the Fall of 2021.

“It is an opportunity for this group of men to do something special for their country that hasn’t been done for a long time,” said Herdman. “Our players do not need much motivation, they’re just really excited to play for their country again and every time we’re together we remind them that this team can change football in this nation.”

In all, Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team face a busy international schedule in 2021 that includes the four competitive matches in FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Qualifiers in March and June. Also, in March, Canada Soccer’s Men’s U-23 National Team is competing at the Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying in Guadalajara, Mexico. In July, Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team are scheduled to compete in the Concacaf Gold Cup with group stage matches against Martinique, USA and a yet-to-be determined third opponent.

CANADA SQUAD
The Canada roster features a mix of established veterans and young players who will be embarking on their first FIFA World Cup Qualifiers campaign.

Canada Soccer’s 2020 Player of the Year Alphonso Davies is set to return to Canadian colours for the first time following an incredible year of personal and club achievements. With Davies playing a crucial role, FC Bayern München captured a historic six trophies in 2020 including the UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, Bundesliga Title, DFB Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and German Super Cup. Individually, Davies was recognized for his outstanding play as he was named co-winner of the 2020 Lou Marsh Memorial Trophy as Canada’s outstanding athlete, the Lionel Conacher Award as the Canadian Press Male Athlete of the Year, and the Postmedia Canadian Male Athlete of the Year Award.

Veteran midfielder and six-time Canada Soccer Player of the Year, Atiba Hutchison, will return to action for Canada looking to build on his 84 appearances wearing the maple leaf on the international stage over his illustrious career. Hutchison is joined by his Beşiktaş teammate Cyle Larin with the duo combining to push their club to top of the Súper Lig table in Turkey.

Goalkeeper Milan Borjan of FK Crvena zvezda (Red Star Belgrade in Serbia), midfielder Sam Piette of CF Montreal (Canada), and forward Junior Hoilett of Cardiff City (Wales) are among the veterans who will bring previous FIFA World Cup Qualifying experience to the squad.

In total, the players named to Canada’s roster have made 343 appearances for their country. Returning members of the squad include goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau (Vancouver Whitecaps FC); defenders Steven Vitória (Moreirense FC), Kamal Miller (CF Montreal), Richie Laryea (Toronto FC), and Samuel Adekugbe (Vålerenga Fotball); midfielders, Mark-Anthony Kaye (Los Angeles FC), Stephen Eustáquio (F.C. Paços de Ferreira), David Wotherspoon (St. Johnstone FC), and Jayden Nelson (Toronto FC); and forwards Liam Millar (Charlton Athletic FC) and Lucas Cavallini (Vancouver Whitecaps FC).

Defender Ricardo Ferreira receives his first call-up to Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team following his change of national associations in February, and will be joined by 18-year old Theo Corbeanu of Woverhampton Wanderers FC in participating in their first Canada camp. Including Ferreira and Corbeanu, there are a total of seven players in Canada’s squad who will be looking to make their first international “A” appearance. Other potential debutants are Dayne St. Clair of Minnesota United (USA), Frank Sturing of FC Den Bosch (Netherlands), Joel Waterman of CF Montreal (Canada), Alistair Johnston of Nashville SC (USA), and Cristian Gutierrez of Vancouver Whitecaps FC (Canada), all five of whom participated in Canada’s recent January training camp in Florida, USA.

Canada Soccer made every effort to secure all Men’s National Team players to participate in the March FIFA window. However, forward Jonathan David was unavailable for the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Qualifiers in Florida.

“It’s been tough behind the scenes to make sure that players could be available to us, but unfortunately it wasn’t possible with Jonathan,” said Herdman. “However, we’ll come through these times and see Jonathan back on the pitch for Canada in the near future.”

FIFA WORLD CUP QATAR 2022™ QUALIFIERS
Concacaf have established Canada’s pathway for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Qualifiers beginning with a First Round being played amongst the Concacaf Member Associations ranked 6-35 based on the FIFA Men’s Ranking as of 16 July 2020. From the first round of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ Qualifiers, the Group B winner will face the Group E winner in a second-round, head-to-head series. The winner from that second round then advances to the Concacaf Final Round of eight nations in which each nation will play each opponent twice (once at home and once on the road).

Who is Theo Corbeanu? The 'outstanding' wonderkid in the Wolves squad for Burnley

Theo Corbeanu is in a Wolverhampton Wanderers squad for the first time with his inclusion in the matchday contingent for the Premier League match against Burnley
Alex Dicken Birmingham Live 7 DEC 2020

Wolverhampton Wanderers youngster Theo Corbeanu is now a fully-fledged member of Nuno Espirito Santo's senior setup.

The Canadian-born Romanian citizen, a winger, has impressed in the Under-23s and scored a brace in a 4-2 win at West Bromwich Albion earlier this month that has reinforced Nuno's view that he is ready for a matchday squad.

He was named among nine substitutes, now allowed after a vote, for the Premier League match against Burnley at Turf Moor on Monday evening.

After scoring four times in nine Premier League 2 games, it is the potential of Corbeanu which is so exciting.

A unique ability to change pace without it being noticeable, equally brilliant technique with either foot which makes you question which is the stronger, and a chiselled frame that belies his tender years are just three of Corbeanu’s stand-out features.

Under-23s boss James Collins can name a lot more: “He’s athletic, tall, can head it, can defend, can dribble past people and score, he can shoot, he can pass, he’s both footed, he’s got a bit of everything.”

Collins has only recently introduced Corbeanu to Wolves’ second string after the Canadian, who is of Romanian heritage, stood out for the club’s under-18s last year.

Already, though, Corbeanu has become the player who instantly grabs your attention when you watch them.

“Theo can be anything he wants to be,” Collins continues. “He’s an outstanding prospect. But, and there’s always a but with these players, he’s got to learn to play within the system and play with the others, adapt his game for different scenarios and situations.

“He’s got to keep improving and he knows that, he’s another good kid who wants to learn - but I think Theo can be as good as he wants to be.”

Corbeanu started out as a goalkeeper before realising he had a knack for scoring goals at the age of eight. He is by no means an out-and-out centre-forward however and tends to drift wide where he can isolate opposition players in one-v-one situations.

“He can be wide - in our system with the three up front that’s probably his best position - but up front when we’ve got TP (Taylor Perry) and Meritan (Shabani) who can run through from midfield, I don’t think it’s a problem if he drifts wide as well,” Collins explained. “When he picks the ball up wide he’s very dangerous at taking his man on.

“We analyse that every game: Is he getting in the box enough? Is he getting on the end of things? Or is he just good on the eye?

“He’s got to improve that area but what he’s offering the team at the moment is excellent.”

While Fabio Silva - who is the same age as the Canadian - arrived for an enormous fee, Wolves ’ academy picked up Corbeanu relatively simply. He was visiting the UK a couple of years ago and an agent recommended him to academy boss Scott Sellars.

He aced his trial period and signed a two-year scholarship deal which has since been upgraded to a professional contract until 2023.

“Over his scholarship years with us it was a bit up and down, a bit inconsistent, but you’d always see glimpses of what he could be,” said Sellars. "He’s probably one, with the lockdown, who has come back and it’s had a positive effect on. He’s come back as a first year professional and I think he’s surprised everybody. He’s been excellent.

“From minute one of pre-season he’s probably been our best player. He’s a player that whenever he gets the ball he excites me, I think something is going to happen.”

Corbeanu is well known to Nuno and trains regularly with the first team, just as many of his under-23 teammates do. He was a surprise inclusion in the squad which toured China last year.

Sellars added: “I have no doubt that come January we’re going to have lots of enquiries from people wanting to take him on loan because of how he’s performing.”

Teenage Canadians Jebbison, Corbeanu have day to remember in Premier League
By Neil Davidson The Canadian Press

A pair of teenage Canadian soccer players had days to remember Sunday.

Canadian-born forward Daniel Jebbison became the youngest player to score in his first Premier League start in Sheffield United’s 1-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park.

Jebbison, aged 17 years 309 days, scored seven minutes into the game, getting a foot to Jack Robinson’s cross.

“It’s crazy,” Jebbison said after the match. “I can’t really describe the feeling when I scored. It’s amazing.”

And Canadian international winger Theo Corbeanu, who turns 19 on Monday, made his Premier League debut off the bench in Wolverhampton’s 2-0 loss Sunday at Tottenham.

---

Jebbison's dad was the CIAU men's bball player of the year in 88 & 89 and won three straight national titles with Brandon. Jebbison is currently committed to England's program but Canada Soccer is supposedly meeting with him later this summer.

Our men's program is not only improving drastically but I would say I like Canada's chances headed into the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup but also our 2 upcoming final qualifying group games against Aruba and Suriname

Jonathan David is the star of the match as he scores the opener and draws a penalty on the other as his Lille side win a 2-0 victory on their way to the French league title.

Pretty good year for Canadian players, the following have been major contributors on their teams and have won league titles this year:

Jonathan David - Lille, France
Alphonso Davies - Bayern Munich, Germany
Atiba Hutchinson/Cyle Larin - Beşiktaş, Turkey
Scott Arfield - Rangers, Scotland
Milan Borjan - FK Crvena zvezda (Red Star Belgrade), Serbia

I wonder if this is the most Canadians to ever win an overseas league title in one season. I'd guess it is.

Loving little ol' Lille winning the league over money bags PSG. PSG is one of those big clubs that got invited to the exclusive European Super League. I can't remember why they had to decline but I thought it was something to do with sponsorship or you'd imagine they would have accepted. LOL.

This also happened when Montpellier won it in 2011 over PSG. PSG was leading by 3 points at the end of the year, then let go of their no name manager, hired big money Carlo Ancelotti for the rest of the season and they finished 3 points behind. Paying big name managers a bunch of millions is a waste of money 99% of the time in virtually any sport.

I'm fairly certain it's the most Canadians to both win titles and appear in Europe in a single season.

They mention Borjan's incredible season. Undefeated, 34 wins, 3 draws, only 19 goals against.

Canada if we win our World Cup qualifying matches against Aruba and Suriname next month, we not only win our qualifying group but go on to the next round where we would have to face either Haiti or Nicaragua in a 2 leg playoff. If we then win that playoff, we go on to the Octagonal. In the Octagonal, we would have to go up against the likes of teams like USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, Jamaica and Honduras and 3 other teams to get to Qatar.
