The fluting detail is still there, as noted by the strange appearance of dashed lines where the pieces of cladding meet each other (this is a not a result of image quality as they would be smooth continous black lines if the fluting was gone), the lines of the fluting are also the slightest visible when looking very closely. The fluting itself does not spead that far from the point of convergence but for the extreme corner portions where it rises dramatically. It's a very subtle detail.

Yes, it’s all about that base! Iconic from every angle.

I ride the New Haven Line and look forward to seeing this glorious new site on Lex when I leave GCT.

Champagne will flow when demolition of this vile eyesore commences.

Saw in YIMBY some very positive comments but a surprising number trashing this soaring masterpiece as "dystopian, monstrosity, out of scale, boring, ugly, corporate" and you just can't please some people. There were some subtle changes from the original plan and it looks really good. Wondering when the current Hyatt monstrosity is going to be demolished?

There's always going to be folks that will never be pleased, just the way of the world. If its for 9 DeKalb or 175 Park or 270 Park, some just will never like it. At times, it could also be a matter of letting it settle in, as opinions do change. Or it could also mean that they have no idea what they are talking about but oh well, this will rise, and be glorious at the end of the day!

Just look at those idiots in the community board meetings. Some weren't a fan either. And not just for this but for other projects. Thankfully they are just advisory and not the overlords of what gets built. City would look like garbage if they had true power.

You have to understand that there are people who will never be happy with anything, regardless of what it is, how good it looks, or how much it will improve things. Take it to the internet, and thats tenfold. Which is why I don’t entertain idiots. I know what I know, and that’s it. Everyone has their own opinions. Even fools.

As beautiful as this tower is, there are still other great things that come with its construction, thanks to the way the zoning that allows it to be built works. Obviously, getting rid of the black hole that is the Grand Hyatt is a plus. The open plaza that will surround the new tower, opening up views of Grand Central, the Chrysler, and even the Graybar Building is huge for the area. There will be the new transit hall, providing much needed circulation space to Grand Central, also adding some new skylights that will bring daylight into the hall. There will be a reconfiguration of the Graybar passage, doubling the ceiling height there. (I wish they could have added some skylights there as well). There will also be a direct entrance to 175 Park from the passage (similar to the MetLife escalators), giving workers direct connections to the subway, Metro North, and the LIRR without ever stepping outdoors. There will be a direct subway connection built between the new LIRR terminal and the subways (as it is now, passengers will have to go up through the main terminal, and back down again). And there will be a reconfiguration of the 4/5/6 station, one of the most congested in the system, finally bringing some clarity and orientation to that station. It’s a win all around. And we get one of the best looking skyscrapers ever built in the city.

Yeah, I think its overlooked because tge building gets all the attention (it is a skyscraper forum), but the many benefits outweigh any complaint about the building being too tall.

I think you meant to say Lexington Passage, otherwise you've nicely summed up the number of points that the design of the base will offer. But I wouldn't personally say that the zoning is what determined the design or allowed it to be built how it is being built, particularly as it relates to the base conditions, I'd say that's a result of the subterranean conditions. I could be misunderstanding that beginning part of your post though.

Speaking of which, does anyone (ehmm NYguy) know about where in this thread those PDF presentation images showing the transit improvements are located. SSP search isn't much help when looking for images.

Yes. Don’t know how I mixed that up, the Graybar is the nice looking one.

Some transformation to come for the Lexington…

A look at the Graybar Passage. These were taken during the shutdown.

I've always wanted to see these empty arches filled with mirrors with mullions that replicate the storefronts.

The Hyatt is expected to close by the end of the year, and from there we will move into the demo/construction phase of this project. I've gone back to the FEIS to look over some of the details, and while the anticipated start time is obviously different, you get an idea of what to expect.

Demolition and foundation work is expected to begin at the same time.

There will be a platform placed over the subway station, similar to the placement of a platform over the Metro-North trains during 270 Park's demo/construction.

Comparing some of the changes we've seen so far. Early on, I wasn't sure if I looked the newer look better, but a comparison made it clear for me which one was the standout design.

An idea of what a thinner design would look like...
