Today, the final 6 kilometre stretch of the Conception Bay Bypass was opened to the public. Construction on this highway first began in 1994 and it is almost certainly the most-travelled commuter highway in the St. John's CMA. It links downtown St. John's with the furthest southwest reaches of the CMA.

This is the stretch that is now complete:

And this is the whole highway for context:

Was the Pitts Memorial Dr. part of the 1994 construction too, or just the bypass at the TCH and Mount Pearl?

That just looks so damn far away. How long does it take to get from one end to the other?

Pitts Memorial as far as the TCH was built much earlier:

Quote:
Newfoundland and Labrador Route 2, also known as Pitts Memorial Drive or the Harbour Arterial and CBS Bypass, is a four-lane divided expressway in St. John's. The road provides a direct link from the Trans-Canada Highway to the downtown core, which was previously accessible only via city streets such as Topsail Road or Kenmount Road. Construction of the Harbour Arterial began in the early 1970s and was completed in 1979.
But it and the CBS Bypass are all part of Route 2.

To get from the Downtown to Holyrood, the nearest Conception Bay South community not included in our CMA and just a short distance from where Route 2 now ends, in ideal driving conditions:

Using Route 2: 45.5 km (39 minutes). However, I don't know anyone heading to CBS for whom the drive regularly takes longer than 25. Traffic flow here tends to be 20-40km/hr above the posted speed limit on highways.

Before Route 2: 44.3 km (57 minutes). And, again, this is wishful thinking. It can take that long just to reach Mount Pearl in traffic. Kenmount Road is a parking lot in the evenings.

*****

More typical...

Let's say you're going to Manuels, one of the larger suburban communities in CBS.

Using Route 2: 23.4 km (16 minutes)
Before Route 2: 22 km (30 minutes)

The most recent information I can find is that it will be completed this year, but that estimate is from October, 2013. It could be delayed since then.

(I'm assuming you're from here and that's why you're asking - but just for the benefit of everyone else...)

The Team Gushue Highway is this one here:

The upper portion, from the Outer Ring Road to Kenmount Road, is already completed and open. The extension from Kenmount Road to Brookfield Road is the part currently under construction. The green part in the middle is a hilltop, that was until recently above the allowed elevation for development in St. John's. It's not a park or anything, and now can be filled in with developments.

Why isn't Team Gushue Highway connecting to Pitts Memorial Drive? It is a logical connection and it is almost there as it is.

That may the plan in the future, I don't know. But it's only a few blocks from the existing Commonwealth Avenue access to Pitts Memorial Drive.

For the time being, there isn't really any common reason to need to get off Pitts Memorial Drive in that particular area. The surrounding residential areas have more convenient access points already, and that stretch of Brookfield is mostly farmland.

*****

EDIT: Just checked to see if the plans explained what it was going to do, and the Team Gushue Highway is going to take over the stretch of Brookfield Road to Commonwealth Avenue as well as the latter's existing access to Pitts Memorial Drive:

The people most excited about Team Gushue are the folks (including my parents) on Mount Carson (middle left). Right now that residential street is the main commuter route for residents of Mount Pearl who take Kenmount Road out of downtown at the end of the day. Team Gushue should perform that role instead soon.

Also, wow, the graphic they used for that plan is sssooo outdated. Lots of development missing, lots of outdated road design (Mount Carson's access to Kenmount Road, for example, is smooth now - not a jagged 90-degree turn as it was when this was taken.

what are the AADT numbers for A-40? That video claims it is the second busiest highway in the country after the 401 and I'm wondering if it beats the 427 which also still posts huge numbers, something like 350k.

If the 427 is in that range I would be very surprised if the 40 in central Montreal could beat that. The number I have seen for it from a few years ago were in the 200K range. Décarie is around the same.

In 2006, A-40 métropolitaine 204 000
still 2006, Décarie A-15 209 000

''Highway 427 is the second busiest freeway in Canada with an average of 300,000 vehicles that use it between the QEW and Highway 401 per day''

According to the Atlas des transports, there was a peak of 207 000 vehicles in 2010 just further east of Décarie Interchange. Thats the higher I can find.

I'd wouldn't be surprised if a couple other parts of GTA highways beat that as well, the 400 probably does and possibly the 404, maybe a bit of the 403.. Montreal has a much denser highway network though so it makes sense it doesn't post as large numbers. The 720 is amazing as always though, the tunnel is really neat but it's a shame it was never properly connected, it seems rather overbuilt currently.

The highways in Montréal are mainly 3 lanes wide. You can't have higher AADT when you reach a certain number. 215 000 is probably the maximum for Décarie. The 720 will see major changes in the near future. The new configuration will eliminate the elevated part and add lanes. Autoroute 720 will be called route 136.
