Looks like Virgin and Alaska Air are going to merge. There go the discounted first class fares to California. Virgin offered frequent discounts on first, and United tended to match them, especially to the Bay Area. Oh, well....

Thats a bummer. The skies just keep getting less and less diverse each year, with fewer liveries and fewer aircraft types, and fewer options and less competition.

At least no hubs are likely to get cut.

This route was brought on to compete directly with Allegiant's new AUS-ABQ route.

Also, this route is "seasonal" and will only fly once a week (on Sundays). However, as the article states (and was reiterated in articles in AAS and ABJ) that the "seasonal" could get lifted and/or more flights be added to the route...should the demand exist.

This one will be interesting to watch.

It could fly more often when Allegiant moves to the South Terminal.

I believe there may be some serious delays in the opening of the South Terminal...if it ever opens as a (currently proposed) low-cost terminal.

I have the feeling that new route announcements are going to be fewer and farther between going forward, not because people don't want to fly to/from Austin, but because ABIA simply does not have the capacity to handle much more for the next couple years.

I'm not a fan of the South terminal because I think the impression it will leave on arriving out of town passengers will be a poor representation of ABIA and the COA. That being said, it is necessary as a relief low cost alternative to doing nothing until expansion on the main terminal is complete. I also think it will look cool having boarding and deboarding of passengers at a different location at the airport.

They'll be flying in from Allegiant so I'm sure they'll think it's the terminal they deserve.

I'm pretty sure that's for the main terminal expansion. The 1st phase is clearing a few buildings, laying more concrete for expanded apron and then actually building the terminal.

I don't remember seeing anything about having to clear buildings for the south terminal renovation. What indication is there for the south terminal being delayed? The council gave final approval last year.

I see Iberia uses the same cleaning crew as Air France.

Quick question for you airport/aviation enthusiasts: Do you ever have runways that run East/West instead of North/South? I know that some are NE/SW, NW/SE, etc., on occasion, but I don't know that I've personally seen one running true East and true West. If it does happen, it seems to be less frequent. Why is that? I'm just curious and figured at least one of you guys would know the answer to that.

Runways are generally constructed to run in the direction of the prevailing winds. Perpendicular to the prevailing winds would require the sometimes dangerous crosswind landings. So if the prevailing wnds are from the north or south, like in Austin, ideally you'd want north to south runways. If you have the luxury of land space, having an east west runway would be nice when you have crosswind conditions. That being said, I believe our old airport was more east to west on the main runway. On the west coast near the Pacific, the runways are generally east to west facing into the prevailing winds off the ocean.

Actually, DFW Airport has 5 north to south runways, and 2 northwest to southeast runways.

Yes sir you are right. You replied to my post before I deleted the original and rewrote it because I wasn't sure of the exact number. I get lazy and don't always do the reseach, but I was close at 4
