I think this is the year where downtown gets priority when it comes to sweeping. Normally, as I understand, it rotates from downtown one year, to major collectors the next.

They were sweeping up in our area yesterday, 112th ave & 86 st area. It's nice to see on high walking traffic roads, say close to an LRT station like we are, as the dust kicked up by traffic can get quite bad

If it snows this weekend hopefully they can resist the urge to dump more sand. What we really need is a good rain to wash the grit off everything.

Anybody else noticing the mysterious billboards and signs all over town; that display a gold key and say march 19 thats all.... I'm going to take a wild guess and say march 19 will be the opening of ultima sales centre

I question the need to even dump sand on the roads anymore. I don't think sand is even used on AHD as it seems that a liquid ice melt solution is used. I wonder if the city is trapped by inertia and is only doing what has always been done. They need to consider clean-up costs, air quality (dust), damage to vegetation, premature road wear (lane marking errorsion most noticeably), and asetetics. I also prefer not having to replace windshields on a bi-annual basis.

The traditional thinking has been that it is too cold here to rely on strictly chemical means to provide traction. This past winter says otherwise.

They still use it, I've followed a few trucks. Sand is still the most cost efficient means of providing traction in a winter city.And the chemicals all have there inherant problems. Salt is only effective to -15c Chemicals if I recall are not much more than -20C. This past year was an anomoly as was last years heavy snow. I remeber the city one year trying to heat the sand in order to make the sand more effective at Sub 25C temp. Groat roadthat year was always a bum puckering ride.

Happy St. Paddy's Day to all!

I was out last night to the Druid, Suede and OJ's on 102 Ave. Suede has Yellowhead on tap (didn't drink any though, since I chose other stuff, including a double Jamesons on the rocks instead), but I don't know for how long because I hadn't been in there very often in recent months. Also, two new 46" LCD TVs have replaced the much smaller ones, but otherwise, nothing much's changed in terms of decor since the change of ownership last year. I didn't have any problems with the service in Suede that night, nor in getting the bartender to switch to SportsNet-West so I could see the Oilers game. It wasn't crowded, either.

The other thing I noticed is that D'Lish is closed as of March 13.* Permanently, I'm afraid. There was a note on the door stating why it closed - mainly due to financial reasons, unfortunately. I did manage, however, to have had a couple of wines there a few weeks earlier.

*This was mentioned a few days ago in C2E, but there may be some non C2E members here who might not be already aware, so I wanted to mention this.

^I'm sure he is aware of that. But since it's posted here I'll comment here about Centaur's post as well. Went to suede last Suturday for my birthday; nice small lounge with a good atmosphere. Food was 'meh' seems like they make the dishes look nice just to hike the price up. Good service by the managers, the waitresses were ok. It's a good place to drink I'd say.

Looks like the Crane on Mayfair came down last night. 109st NB was closed most of the day.
