Tesla needs to cut some R&D spending and mass produced the Model 3 to recover its net loss. The biggest automakers have enough money on their budget for R&D spending without going to the red, save for General Motors.

How can you possibly compare 100+ year old companies, many of which received massive public bailouts, with a 10 year startup that is ramping up at rates rarely ever seen outside of technology.
Of course they are profiting from sales. Each car that rolls off has a good gross margin. I think you might need a refresh on how business and accounting works, and what various levels of spending, debt load, etc. really mean.
