And so far, we're just thinking about visibility - remember, just ten centimetres of snowfall can turn Vancouver into The Day After Tomorrow. Every season, either our Uber equivalent will have to fit each of their autonomous cars out with TransLink's tire socks at $250 a pair, or our roads will likely get choked up with stranded taxis.

also, don't forget that autonomous cars require lane markings; that is something that we lack in a lot of areas. i know that without clearly defined lanes, my car has huge problems trying to find lanes.

i would take anything Musk says with a grain of salt. he is basically a 21st century flim flam man. we will see what happens in the next decade or 2 if he can deliver. the past 15yrs seems to say otherwise. a company that has never made a profit and sells almost no product being worth a ridiculous amount that is equal to companies that make profit and sell millions of cars? sounds like a house of cards.

Despite the his rather wild promises, he really and truly is delivering quite a lot. There are precious few rich people plowing their time and money into advancing positive technological innovations like he is. I've got a lot of respect and admiration for him, but you have to be careful not to get caught up in all the hype.

Exactly. The vast majority of people with his capabilities would rather do some stupid short term fix like build a luxury bomb shelter or plan a move to Mars then do anything remotely about climate change.

Fun fact: 76 confirmed deaths and 1,300+ missing in an expanding wildfire in November. Climate change is here.

Musk is nothing more than a charlatan. His "ideas" are just rehashes of older ideas from actual scientists and claim them as his own by patenting them. The hyperloop is a century-old idea, and Musk makes it as a "brand new thing". (Personally, the Maglev does the job better.) It's just marketing. Plus, it's coming from a guy who hates public transportation, so autonomous buses won't be on his lists.

Bill Gates fits better to this description than Musk. When has Musk did anything good to society in general?

Encourage an alternate fuel type for one and two deliver not only a reasonably priced electric car but design a production ready electric truck for shipping. What has Bill Gates done to encourage a change in habits?

So does Nissan with the Leaf, and they are much more successful with it's sales than any of Tesla's three models. Bill Gates, along with Steve Jobs, built a computer that is affordable to common households, and their low prices allow the companies (Apple and Microsoft) to break even. Tesla has yet to accomplished what Apple did. It's cars are built more for the rich, not middle-income families. At the moment, Tesla's electric trucks are hogwash for shipping companies, especially with diesel's more competitive prices.

500 years from now? better hang onto your license!

The Woz on the subject quoted today:

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak may no longer work for the company in any official capacity, but he has stayed on as a tech advisor and sounding board. When the Woz says something it usually isn’t without merit, which is why it was interesting to learn he thinks self-driving vehicles aren’t going to happen...

..Confessing that he purchased a Tesla because he initially believed in its autonomous vision, Wozniak told CNBC he gradually became disenfranchised with the idea.

“I wanted to be part of this lead in to autonomous driving,” he explained on Fast Money Halftime Report last week. “I wanted to be a part of that crowd and I kept upgrading my Tesla to one that would have a camera and radar. And then one that would have eight cameras and a radar, because the first one would never do it. And then I gave up and I said it’s really not going to happen.”

While Wozniak praised Tesla’s ability to produce effective electric vehicles and complement its vehicles having the foresight to establish a charging infrastructure beyond city centers, he said he was fed up with the industry lying about autonomous vehicles...

Datsun started in 1914, Tesla isn't even 2 decades old.

What have you done?

I don't know if you can call it a "change in habits" but he's dumping a ton of money into malaria research.

For a better comparison than retro's, the Roadster came out in 2008 and the Leaf in 2010.

Tesla's a bit like MySpace - they started first, then everybody else scrambled to catch up, ended up bigger and better, and left them in their dust. It's more of a legacy for Musk than an accomplishment.

snow, fog, heavy rain; we shall see.
I think you need to look at Tesla's Q3 results. Uber doesn't even have a roadmap to profitability.

He makes bold promises that don't always work, and spouts off on twitter a little too often. But doubt him at your own peril.

Do you work for Exxon or something? It's like your information is about 5 years old, or just complete FUD.

Tesla's Model 3 is vastly outselling any other electric car, and even handily beating gas cars in it's class (Mercedes, BMW). Tesla has been outselling the Nissan Leaf for a long time now.

Bill (and Melinda) are doing a lot of great work since retiring. It's great to see his drive and motivation put to some good use. Climate change is what he is tackling now.

Except there was no one else with the wealth and clout to bring these concepts to the public forefront and actually attempting to get them to market. Denying Musk's contributions makes the faulty assumption that there would be someone else in his place and time that would have done the same thing and achieved similar or better results.

Musk has done more good than harm in the electric vehicle/solar power/high speed rail space and that is worth praise and applause.

That’s just nonsense. The Leaf has been the best selling electric car of all time as of September 2018. The concept of the hyperloop has been around for a while, under the name of “vactrains”. Tesla has yet to consistently break even. You’re praise about Musk and from his fanboys is the reason why can’t take him seriously.

Now please, can we stop arguing about Musk in this thread?

Oh, a Nissan press release praising Nissan?

Sure, their only Electric model has outsold individual Tesla models. Tesla has sold more cars than Leafs, period. In less than 6 months the Model 3 will have sold more than all Leafs around the world, despite only being available in North America:

I'm not a Musk fanboy, but I can't stand the complete lack of facts in your argument.
