I am waiting to pass judgement on the architecture of this thing, but I can't wait to see its impact on the public realm.

The space between this and One Pacific certainly will be nothing like the dominant typical Vancouver scheme. It should feel pretty tight and dominated by the close facing facades, both of which will be potently present. The main entrance to the hotel/casino should animate (I hate saying that) the slot with both an opening and a cross axis to the street. Could be interesting.

On the other side, the public plaza should be equally interesting. By being fronted by the more complex forms of Parq and the large scale form and structure of the stadium, this space could be quite positively unique. I can't get a good feel for this space, so I look forward to its construction.

All in all, a crazy amount of change to the character of this little corner of the city. I think it has the potential to truly expand the downtown network of active public spaces. Hopefully its connections to the neighbouring spaces and routes will work well. In an small way (unfortunately), it could operate as a kind of "Entertainment, not district, but node."

I think it'll take them quite a while to build the casino levels of Parq, since it'll have that big atrium and the differing floorplates on each level.

Parq Vancouver Urban Resort Reaches Ground Level

The L-shaped structure will be built to LEED Gold standards. Construction of the complex has advanced past the groundworks stage, and footings are now visible above ground. Parq Vancouver is scheduled to open in January 2017.

PavCo had some thoughts at one time that small retail units would face Pacific Boulevard and fill in some of the "missing teeth" of the stadium part of the street, and this would be mirrored on the other side with the Metro Can property as it develops out. I'm not sure if that ever went anywhere.

I'm not sure if one will be able to walk all the way around the stadium once this project is complete. There are new (?) stairs built that connect to Smythe Street, as seen in this recent photo by mcminsen:

No, the plans show that you won't be able to walk around the stadium (without going through the casino).

From the west (Terry Fox Plaza) you can divert from the concourse around the hotel / casino down stairs to Expo Blvd or through the hotel / casino lobby down stairs / escalators to Smithe St.

From the east, it's more or less a dead end with a smaller hotel entry point (and otherwise serves as an emergency exit from the stadium down to Pacific Blvd)

Wholly unrealistic timelines, it seems.

Here are some better images of those stairs that I got today. They are temporary, made of wood and scaffolding. As best I can tell from the plans, there will be new permanent stairs created that will approximate the temporary ones that are there now. These stairs have only been open during major stadium events like games and concerts so it's been a while since I've been able to access them or the gate G concourse and get some better pics of the site.

Here's what it's like approaching the temporary stairs from the Terry Fox Plaza. It's hard to see in the first pic but there is a fence blocking any access down to the gate G concourse or the temporary steps. So, it's a dead end unless there is a major stadium event on. The second and third pic are taken looking through the fence.
