I dont see that happening. The causeway still remains about 70% of what it was before.

Agreed I think that was only if they put in a bridge the full width of the river, instead they opted for a bridge the partial width, effectively preventing it from returning to those numbers

You’d almost never be able to have the river return to its previous width due to the almost criminal decision to put the dump ON the river bank. Why anybody ever thought it was a good idea to have a garbage dump on the river bank right next to down to I will never understand.

I was half-hoping they'd drop their plan and would sell the lot.

I would be more excited if we were getting something more than this:

This is serviceable, but this lot deserves something much better..............

I vote that we name this building the "Tomato Building."

Tomato lady absolutely had nothing to do with the height of this building - let's get off the topic and applaud the developers for moving forward on this project.

It will be a great addition to downtown and a good use of an empty lot on this corner. Moncton is a city of 180,000 people - not a million. Every building that goes up doesn't have to be 10 stories or more - that is very unrealistic. There is a lot of land downtown - it's great to see taller buildings going up but infill is also important.

If this building was announced 5 years ago you all would have been ecstatic. Just because there are a few buildings in the 15-30 story range going up, doesn't mean they all have to be.

It's not that most people aren't happy that this corner will have a presence. It's more the fact that the NIMBY's without a justifiable cause blocked it from being more -AFTER it had been approved at the city planning level.

Hopefully, with it matching the Tannery height across the street, that corner will look mighty decent, and a once eyesore of a corner will be revitalized.

I'm not sure where else to put this or if it even fits in this forum. Feel free to delete if so.

With all the talk of new buildings, there still is a large amount of the working population who cannot afford rental prices. Some buildings put in some affordable unit but that doesn't house many.

Is it time for Moncton to have micro-unit style apartments like you see in NYC or Toronto. I know that even with me working, if I have to move from where I am now, I don't know if I could find another place. A nice new micro-unit would be more than fine.

I'm not talking about the kind where you don't have a full kitchen or a private bathroom. More of a two burner stove, good sized fridge not bar fridge, studio style or sleeping alcove style.

Developers could fit more units into a building and would offset the lower prices of rent so they don't lose profit.

Wholeheartedly agree.

As Moncton's demographics rapidly change, we're seeing a lot more single people moving here having to choose between sharing an apartment with strangers, renting a room, or paying for a place twice as big as what they actually need.

Studios and microapartments make a lot of sense especially these days.

No, this is an important discussion to have, and this thread is the proper place for it.

You should keep an eye on Galco's approved project for Robinson Street:

Moncton planning committee OK's 6-floor building near Robinson Court
Land swap with city called for developer to construct on site by next year

Quote:
Galco's Stephen Gallant told the committee the building will include bachelor units in the range of 450 to 800 square feet that should be cheaper to rent than larger units in other buildings in the city.

"Moncton is growing, and particularly our downtown, is on fire now," Gallant said. "So at some point, smaller units, in our opinion, will be very much more sought after than the larger units due to the affordability factor."
There has still been no movement on this project as of yet. I'm not sure if this is related to financing issues, rising interest rates or labour shortages, but I was hoping they would have broken ground this year.

Hopefully other developers will consider similar projects for this particular demographic. There is room out there for several buildings like this.

There's a recently completed 132 unit micro-unit apartment building in Fredericton. Not cheap per se, but you can get a furnished one-bedroom for $1150 a month and a studio for $950.

- St. Bernard Square (20+ storeys)

And this doesn't even include Infinity (30 storeys) which is out of this field of view to the east.
So, I decided to add in the silhouettes of the above buildings to see what the city skyline might look like by 2028:

Again, this does not include Infinity (30 storeys).

Great approximation. I wonder if the Ashford development will have more than one highrise. There’s certainly room for it.

This is going to be amazing...I've said for a while...this is a decade behind in my opinion.

But, that said...I can't wait to see our evolving skyline. Going to be tower cranes in Moncton for the foreseeable future.
