I think a lot of developers ask for more height than they actually want as a negotiating position.
Many have shown they would go for increased heights, only to receive resistance. I've already provided examples. Why would they want to go for 60 floors when they are being rejected for 40 or 45 floors. If the city was more open to approving those, then yes, we would be getting 60 to 65 floor developments. See Calgary, see Edmonton.

I might be mistaken but AFAIK, the examples you gave are not companies that build particularly tall buildings elsewhere.

Don't forget that we in Ottawa don't know how to build or service over 30 storeys. Breaking the mold is difficult and expensive. bUt tHeY dO iT In TorOnTo doesn't count.

I'm all for the original proposal of this. Bring back the terra cotta and we can talk again.

I'm sure Dream and M+M have done 60+ buildings, or at least close to it.

Dream seams to have one very tall building (on King West) at the proposal stage but otherwise seems to specialize in mixed communities. I can't find M+M's portfolio.

Wow. Trinity at Bayview would be a piece of cake for them!

Tallest projects today seem to be the 40 storey Station Place and 47 storey 400 king West, both in Toronto. Past projects look to be more Ottawa scaled.

One thing that affects the scale of projects in downtown Ottawa is the damned bedrock. Toronto's ground is perfectly suited to highrise construction.

Edit: perfectly suited to cost effective high rise construction

What's wrong with bedrock? Manhattan has lots of bedrock making it ideal for building skyscrapers.

...where the bedrock is found close to the surface, you can build high, and so Downtown and Midtown host Manhattan's tallest skyscrapers.

I'm listening to the owner of Orange Art Gallery on CBC right now speculating that District Realty is not renewing their lease at City Centre most likely because of an upcoming development. It would be hilarious if City Centre had shovels in the ground before Trinity Centre.

Saw this article that complements what you heard on CBC

Future of Orange Art Gallery uncertain after learning its lease won't be renewed
The gallery has asked the City of Ottawa to designate its building as a heritage property.

I do think this should be a heritage building. Id like to see it incorporated in a new development like the old registry building at the Rideau Centre

If that happens, may as well extend the bridge to Bayview station right across Trinity's lot and connect it to City Centre, cause the former doesn't seem like they'll be using that land any time soon.

Its a warehouse built in the 60s...what heritage impact and importance does it have? It sat derelict and underutilized for decades. Not saying a ware house district wouldn't be cool but designating it as heritage?!

It's actually a historic former CN Railway Bank building constructed in 1914.

I was going off this:

"decrepit office tower and curved row of warehouse bays that date from the 1960s."

https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-new...mplex-finds-new-life-as-hipster-hot-spot

How much of the original structures are left? The Orange Gallery itself was the bank was it not....how much of the tower/warehouse loading bays are 'heritage? I misunderstood that you were calling the whole thing heritage and not simply the one building. Not sure it has much heritage value given the wealth of heritage buildings in Ottawa. Does it currently hold any such desigation?
