I’ve seen these in BC. Don’t think I’ve seen them in any other province I’ve been to.

Yes and no - it’s a complaint everyone has about their own city, but objectively the insurance companies have determined that drivers in some places are better than others. This is why some places have much higher insurance premiums than others.

to be clear 400,000 monthly crossings isn't even 15,000 daily vehicles.

The real capacity issue for the border crossings is the size of the border security facilities, not how many lanes there are on the bridge.

Highway 1 is also used some times from my understanding - but generally, it’s just QEW and nothing else.

Key word is "posted". It is faster due to not having the $10k fine like ON for 50 over.

$1K fines or up for 60 kph over are still quite a bit…

the real punishment in 50 over charges in Ontario isn't the fine, it's the license suspension, impounding of your car, and becoming basically uninsurable. Many drivers convicted of stunt driving get put on retainer insurance which is like $700-1000 per month from my understanding.

Just finished reading the Wikipedia entry for the Trans-Canada Highway. Lots of interesting info.
Here are just a couple of excerpts I like:

“New Brunswick was the first province where the main route of the Trans-Canada Highway was made entirely into a four-lane limited-access divided highway.”

Well done New Brunswick !

and …

“The City of Edmonton is changing its urban section of Highway 16 (TCH) to a six-lane freeway by replacing all signal lights with overpasses.”

Well done Edmonton !

Oh by the way, is a small portion of TCH twinning west of Chase, B.C., done? I see the 4 lanes on Google map satellite view.

Yes, west of chase is complete and open to traffic. The part through Chase is still a ways off it looks like. Drove through on June 28th.

Also - Driving on the 407 on Friday afternoon through Halton Region and it seemed like over 50% of the vehicles on the highway had US plates. Makes me wonder if border crossing volumes are back to more or less normal finally post-COVID.

edit: looking it up - it's getting pretty close. May 2023 saw 381,000 vehicles cross the Peace Bridge vs. 431,000 in 2019.
Many Americans are learning that the cost of most goods and many services is cheaper in Canada right now so it makes sense that more are visiting here to shop and vacation.

I always thought of it as 'a road that goes up a hill'.

I was in the BC Interior on the weekend and saw my share of Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and California plates. Nelson seems to be a popular destination for Americans, as is the Okanagan. And the previous weekend on Highway 99 in Richmond I saw probably 50% or more of vehicles having Washington plates. I spoke to one guy visiting Vancouver from LA.

This is really the first “normal” summer since 2019. We still had ArriveCan at this time a year ago.

I've rarely seen "Heights" as a generic for a street name. Maybe for a small residential one, but not a major road.

Maybe something like "Paiement Heights Blvd." or "Paiement Heights Rd.", but just "Paiement Heights" sounds like a neighbourhood or a subdivision.
