the gem it was never to be gone forever

the walls that talked
the grit that sang
from cranes it sang
so much history to bore
as though to see
from an eagles eye
the tears fall

has fallen
to shake the soul no words to fire
to shake it all to a core to sore
the uttering of empty land to be lost in ire

Your post made me think of this song. I wonder if the Watchmen were thinking of Point Douglas when they wrote it.

Does anyone here live in Point Douglas, or know anyone who does? As much as I support the preservation of historic buildings (and despise neglectful property owners), in this one case, was there ever, in any realistic way, any way of salvaging this building for any useful purpose?

Ignoring for a moment what perhaps should have been done decades ago, what did the city have? An historically significant, but admittedly derelict old industrial site. Was there ever a chance we're see it re-purposed into anything? Did the local residents enjoy having this building in their community, or was it an eyesore that just contributed to the problems of their community?

Even now I think it's going to be a huge challenge to find a group of investors willing to re-build at that location. Cleaning up the site from years of industrial use alone will probably cost many millions. Private investors probably wouldn't touch the project without huge public subsidies.

So we're probably talking about some kind of publically funded project, or a public-private partnership. What can go there, assuming the site can be cleaned up for human habitation, that will benefit the community and the city? A new industrial complex to provide employment? Public housing?

What are the opportunities?

There is undoubtedly cost prohibitive soil remediation required at this site before anything can be built. Looking at google maps, the north part of the original complex appears to have been repurposed into a park.

I like their style, low key, not too splashy with the fanfare. Those who have made the most noise about their developments have tended not to deliver (skycity), aside from TN

Grew up there and rent wearhouse space in the area
I have many friends in pd and am loyal to my butchershop smoke house at Grove and euclid

This building is owned by gateway industries and is tied to the chaos at the point.

In last decade they had been making some repairs to the building after some lobbying from me through my network some things started getting fixed Mr blank did have a soft spot for it so I imagin he's pretty upset about this fire just shame it got caught in the crosshairs of his anger at the feds and city in the late 90's

Context same owner at the point

And there's allot of rhetoric about vacant building demolition being thrown around in media we need to be carefully we don't destroy more history but push for new uses instead

As for this building it was unused by owners choice not cause of market

^ When someone leaves an old building in a semi-abandoned state for years, if not decades on end, you have to wonder if arson isn't the unstated but hoped-for goal.

In some ways this building's fate was sealed years ago by the inactivity on the site. I guess if it were located somewhere else the redevelopment prospects may have been better. It's a tragic loss but I'd argue that it was "lost" many years ago.

Think of how many other similar historic buildings there are around town that could succumb to the same fate if something isn't done with them soon to bring them up to modern standards.

For a downtown that is apparently a write off there seems to be a lot of construction!
