Rolling thunderstorms since 11am this morning at YUL. It got pretty intense from 3-7pm, right in the middle of the evening rush hour. Ground stop, GDP, you name it. There was a tornado warning in the morrisburg, Cornwall, long sault area as well, about an hour’s drive west of Montreal. Heard it from an emergency broadcast on the radio as I was driving home. All that stuff came through YUL as well.

https://flightaware.com/live/cancelled/yesterday

There was a note on the NavCan OIS page next to YUL that said:

Quote:
GRIDLOCK ON THE FIELD, 45-75 MINUTES DELAY BETWEEN LANDING AND GATE AVAILABILITY
At one point, the only thing airborne in the greater Montreal area was a sole AC flight inbound from ALG. It was the 10th most tracked flight on FR24. All the rest were either held on the ground at point of departure, or holding in the air, well away from YUL. What a clusterf**k!

Around 4-5 pm, the wall of CB’s and thunderstorms was so vast, that planes taking off and heading southwest bound (YYZ, ORD, even DFW) were heading northbound, well past Tremblant before they could make the turn left towards the southwest.

Not a good start to July and the peak summer season at YUL.

If they cut YHM to the bone, I would think F8 would be back there in a real hurry.

We'll see, Flair only has so many planes it can use. But, I still don't think we have their full winter schedule yet. I'm skeptical Westjet will do what they did last time, pull out, wait for flair to take over, and then jump back in to YHM.

Lynx has added
Toronto - Fort Myers 4x weekly starting December 14th
Toronto - Tampa 4x weekly starting November 16th
Montreal - Tampa - 4x weekly starting November 17th

Looks like they are going to be more focused on transborder flights rather than domestic flights this upcoming Winter season. Lynx as well learning about seasonality like Flair.

Flair got a sweetheart deal at Pearson. Flair got a even sweeter deal in Waterloo.
Either the city would need to throw money at them (like Waterloo did), or airport offer something great (Like Pearson did).

What money did Waterloo throw at Flair?

Waterloo gave flair some very good subsidies

No airline can compete on flairs routes for 30-36 months, allowing them to build a customer base without the threat of being undercut.
— swoop tried to enter YKF but we’re rejected https://kitchener.ctvnews.ca/swoop-says-...airport-due-to-deal-with-flair-1.5922101

- In 2021, YKF gave Flair $100k in subsidies to set up shop, which included parking passes, marketing, and reduced landing fees.
- in 2022, YKF gave Flair an additional $200k in subsidies to expand its route offerings, which included waiving landing fees for 6 months on new routes, marketing

YKF has treated flair very well, and in return, are receiving adequate air service to support the region.

Anyway, we know PD got the E2 for dirt cheap. How cheap i dont know. 30-35 million?
Realistically, most operators went for the E-195 because it was cheaper or available more quickly than the A220. in other words, second best but other factors weighed in its favour.

Also, transcontinental YVR-YYZ is not an optimal regional jet route. Sure they can do it but it isn't the kind of route it was really designed for.

The exclusivity applies to any airline serving new routes, not just to Flair.

Can’t wait to see what WJ will do with YQM beyond the fall season! Will they keep YYC, YEG and YHM beyond the fall. Here in YQM we need more competition in order to lower prices.

Working for a formerly Onex controlled company, I can safely say they aren't interested in driving down prices in markets they are considering operating or expanding in.

Highly doubt YQM will go year round, but the good news is that next year YYC-YQM starts at the end of April and goes up to daily I believe? And this summer they already added an extra 3 weekly flights to YQM after announcing it.

Just going to note, money was given from Region of Waterloo, to airport, to Airlines. Airport itself gave up non of its own money. Just handled the deal for the region.
