Wow, they are not wasting any time once they got going with the build out! This is still largely flying under the radar due to it being hidden and the building heights, while nice and appropriate for the location, are nothing noteworthy.
The Southgate City Master Plan (2015) is being amended to enhance and support affordable housing in Burnaby. The amendment to the Southgate City Master Plan, which was approved by Council in 2015, is mandated by the City of Burnaby to address their new Rental Use Zoning Policy. Whats with the large number of columns on those mid-rises? It looks like they will make the balconies hard to use.
They have quite a useful function - they hold the building up. The 'pointy' extended balconies are part of the woodframe building, and the extra column is needed because of the extent of the cantilever. Maybe, if it was concrete, they could have got away with a single column, but it would be more expensive to build, and so the prices of units would be higher.
I know why they're there, the design is just very poorly thought out. If you can't afford to do the cantilever right, just don't bother with it.
Sorry, that wasn't obvious from your first comment. I guess they think having bigger balconies, and less usual rectangular plan, offsets the aesthetics of having an additional column. They're selling the project as having 'generously large balconies or patios with outdoor lighting to expand your living space.'
I guess I would have to see pictures on the balconies to understand if it's actually an issue. From the ground, it seems like it would impact their functionality quite a bit and your ability to take advantage of the larger space. Maybe it's not as bad as it looks though.

Sure ideally the balcony would be uninterrupted but it’s a huge balcony on a wood frame building with a somewhat complex (not square) design, there needs to be a compromise somewhere.
