I will probably get flamed, but I would almost guess AUS today could be more lucrative than the PDX-HND flight.

Hello, I recently moved to Austin, and I love aviation. I noticed ABIA has a "Family Viewing Area".

I was wondering if you could share what could be the best day/time to catch some widebodies coming in/out of the city. Possibly with some sunlight.

Thanks!

Unless it was a typo or misunderstanding in the attached article - why in the world does it take AUS roughly the same amount of time to build a $164 million, 80,000 SF, 3-gate extension to the BJT as DFW can build a new, $1.63 billion, 15-gate Terminal F? Both are slated to be delivered in 2026.

I'd speculate that adding a completely new terminal likely won't affect current operations or require the extra logistics that are going to be needed for the AUS extension. i.e. They aren't going to have to reallocate gates and shift schedules and who knows what else. Just build and go.

It also may be that this has been in work longer.

"DFW-based American and the airport had announced plans to build a new terminal in 2019, but the COVID pandemic put the project on the back burner"

even though it was on the "back burner" they could have still been working through planning/clearance/architectural issues.

Austin has lots of permits and environmental studies before construction starts and even during. One endangered spider found in underground caves while digging can hold up a project for months.

A true apples to apples comparison is pretty difficult, if not impossible to make. One could be equally dramatic by pointing out that one project will cost over $108 million per gate and the other #54 million, but that wouldn't be a fair comparison either.

Some airports kick-ass and get things done while some airports make excuse after excuse as to why they can or can't get things done. I'll give AUS one thing they're great at the latter.

I don't think it's a screw up. The south terminal provided badly needed terminal space for cheap airlines. We also didn't spend any money operating it or setting it up. So basically, we spent about 15 million dollars a year subsidizing family vacations for the people of Austin. Maybe that's a waste to some people. I think it's fine.
