I strongly recommend you all fill in the survey, if you would like to show your support for this development.

As a neighbourhood resident, this site as it currently stands is majorly underutilized. We need new developments to help revitalize the area and bring in more people to support local businesses. The status quo is really unacceptable, though i do feel things are getting better under ABC.

Just to set the time-line, here is a Sep 25, 2014, 3:19 PM post, NINE years ago, from hollywoodnorth.

May 29th meeting now on the Development Permit Board Agenda. Has link to "Decision of DPB regarding court ordered reconsideration of DP-2017-00681 PDF file (374 KB)" document as well.

From the ShapeYourCity.ca page: Anyone may attend the in-person Development Permit Board(External link) meeting at City Hall (453 W 12th Ave, Ground Floor, Town Hall Meeting Room) on Monday, May 29, 2023 at 3pm, and speak on this application.

Who wants to guess how many speakers will sign up? Closest guess gets the admiration of SSP Forumers! Has opposition sharpened or melted away in the 5+ yr since this begun?

To put it frankly, I bet most of the opponents from 10 years ago are no longer alive.

It's only six years since the DP Board that has to be held again (this time with reasons) and the organisers of the opposition are still very active.

Reminds me of the West Side opposition I get to rental. Like... by the time I get this thing occupied you'll be in a retirement home on Vancouver Island or dead lol

Sent in my support as well. Should have been a different outcome the first time around.

Melody Ma certainly made it much worse with the group's anti-development and chauvinistic rhetoric.

Also Melody Ma couldn't find anything to tweet about for the last 18 months until last week when she tweeted about 105.

(sigh) Melody Ma really needs to learn how perspective works. This isn't the first time.

is it "needing to learn" or is it "pushing an agenda?" i would call it the agenda pushing one.

DailyHive.com - Seven major organizations in Vancouver's Chinatown come forward in support of 105 Keefer proposal
Kenneth Chan May 24 2023, 5:22 pm https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/105-...ations-support

"Some of the largest and most influential organizations representing business, cultural, and housing interests in Vancouver’s historic Chinatown district have come forward in support of the nine-storey, mixed-use building proposal at 105 Keefer Street.

In an open letter released Wednesday afternoon, seven organizations have publicly declared their support ahead of the City of Vancouver’s Development Permit Board meeting to reconsider the 2017 development permit application by local developer Beedie.

The organizations entail the Chinese Benevolent Association of Vancouver, Chinese Freemasons of Vancouver, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden Society, Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Vancouver, Vancouver Chinatown Merchant’s Association, Vancouver Chinatown Business Improvement Association Society, and Vancouver Chinatown Foundation.

“This is an unprecedented, collective display of support for our community when it comes to development,” says Jordan Eng, president of the Chinatown Business Improvement Association, in a statement on behalf of all of the organizations.

“While our community was divided over this issue in 2014, much has changed since then and today, we stand united in support for this project, and for the continued renewal of Chinatown; this important, historic, and cultural jewel in our City.

...”

Sooner or later, the neighbourhood's going to have to realize that the old way of living doesn't work anymore.

The old man does have a point that this proposal could look more Chinatown-ish... while also noting that such an exterior will likely drive the costs up (which he probably won't like either).

Fair point if this were located on Pender, or even Keefer east of Main, but at present it's a pile of dirt on a block that's already redeveloped ALL of its historic buildings (other than the Keefer Block, which doesn't exactly scream Chinatown either). We can't save what's already gone.

There's an original Sam Kee building at 145 Keefer from 1912, and 135 Keefer is from 1910 (which wasn't functionally related to Chinatown as it was the showroom of the Vancouver Gas Co), but the site on the corner of Columbia (105 Keefer) was a 1930s vaguely art deco gas station until it was demolished, so there's never been a 'Chinese' building there.

there was a woman on CKNW this morning who was against this building and was from some organization down there, I don't think she lived in that area and she was quite annoying to listen to so I changed the station but I did hear something she said and that was she is only willing to accept 100% low rent units at that site and they do not want condos in the area.
