I dream of a unique skyline and not this table top we have now due to the viewplains.

I worry in the years to come Dartmouth could have a more unique skyline based on the developments planed for around the MacDonald bridge and over to moffatts Pharmacy and they don't have the worry about view plains nearly as much as the downtown of Halifax does.

No question this will happen. Imagine a day when the feature of Halifax is the view of Dartmouth?!

Keep in mind that in the 1970's, not to be out done by Halifax, Dartmouth instituted view planes. There are less of them but they mainly project from the Dartmouth Commons area.
This was in an era of me tooism.
Halifax got the Metro Centre, Dartmouth got the SportsPlex
Halifax got Scotia Square (Mall with 4 buildings on top). Dartmouth got Queens Square. (Mall with 2 towers on top, Well only 1 but if you look off the 1st tower you can see the placement of the 2nd tower that was never built)
There were a lot of me tooism before amalgamations. That's one of the main reasons for it. The provincial government got tired of the squabbling.

There is no "mall" in Queen Square.

United Gulf has begun demolition of the existing office building (1568 Hollis) and has evicted parkers on the vacant lot next to it in preparation for construction. Once the demo is complete and the hoarding goes up, excavation will begin. The company says the project is now a top priority.

Dare we hope?

More than 18 years since United Gulf acquired the site and 16 years since its first proposal was cleared by UARB, I expect most will believe it only when construction is actually complete.

Oh, I'm firmly in the BIWISI (believe it when I see it) camp with United Gulf.

Their new prez said in AllNS today that it's now a firm go, for whatever that's worth.

Yeah, agree. But in their favour, they've dumbed the design down enough for this one to BE believed.

It is funny how the original proposal was well beyond other projects of its day (in terms of size and Hariri Pontarini design), and the twin 48 storey tower proposal was well beyond what would ever be approved, but the project has taken so long that everything else has caught up and it's in the middle of the pack (smaller than the St. Pat's project for example which is a fairly conventional infill project in 90 m zoning).

I am hesitant to believe it too but by spending money on permits and demolishing buildings they are "committing" in a way they didn't before. I think this is arguably the worst empty lot downtown? The "parking lot district" will shrink down to the Maple lot, Waterfront Warehouse, and former proposed AGNS lot. It used to be many times larger.

It is only for the demolition and excavation. States excavation should be complete by August 2025.

5 levels of parking and it looks like the 21 storey floor count (from the Hollis side) excludes the penthouse structures.

I wonder how well-used the Metro Park is today and if it could be rendered redundant by underground parking.

It's very well used. Usually, almost full anytime I have used it.

The restrictive viewplanes have created a chunky, block-like tabletop skyline. Developers have to max out the restricted space by building square. Planning doesn't seem to get that. Sadly, the harbour views are mostly blocked even with the viewplane legislation and then there is the backup of the rampart siteline that restricts after the view of the harbour has already been blocked.
