Flair has added extra flights on Victoria day to a variety of routes.

The extra western triangle routes flair added for Friday have done very well. Hopefully their next bet on Monday pays off.

Looks like AC will be adding YYZ-YZF for W23.

AC1168/69, 3x weekly 223 starting Dec 2023. Red-eye for the EB flight.

Westjet avoided a strike today.

CBC Article

I suspect management knew they were up a creek with no paddle.

Onex...er, Westjet gets the employees they deserve.

Want a non-union airline? Pay and treat skilled people well to keep people happy, just like Delta Air Lines does. Especially when those skilled people know they've the upper hand.

Want an acrimonious relationship? Nickel and dime talented people.

Do you know what the details are of the agreement? Unless you do then you don't really know who "won". More than likely both sides compromised to the point where they could "live with" the deal. The main people that won here are the passengers.

I wonder if it'll be winter seasonal only? Air North fly YYZ-YZF-YXY in summer.

Looks like airfares will be going up:

WestJet averts strike with deal handing its pilots significant pay raises
ERIC ATKINS TRANSPORTATION REPORTER
PUBLISHED 1 HOUR AGO
FOR SUBSCRIBERS

WestJet Airlines and its pilots’ union staved off a strike at the start of the travel season with a tentative four-year deal that provides significant raises and better working conditions.

The contract, which must be ratified by WestJet and Swoop’s 1,800 pilots, makes them the highest-paid crews on narrow-body aircraft in Canada, and provides double-digit pay increases in the first year, said Tim Perry, Canadian president of the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA).

Mr. Perry declined to provide details because union members have yet to see the proposal. A ratification vote is expected in a few weeks.

The settlement, reached early Friday morning at a hotel near Toronto Pearson International Airport, includes an additional $400-million in pilot wages over the life of the deal, and the possibility of creating the first pension plan for members...

....The new WestJet proposal changes that, he said. Air Canada, expected to begin contract talks with ALPA in the summer, could be next, he said. “We have seen a preview of what ALPA will do with Air Canada. That’s going to happen sooner than later,” Mr. Gradek said.

No the passengers are the losers in all of this. I can safely say that not knowing the details of the agreement.

Passengers were dragged into a fight they have no interest in being involved in. Their travel plans were negatively impacted.

Ii am flying today on Air Canada between Toronto and Vancouver. Tried to get ab earlier flight and there is nothing available. In fact there are no seats direct or connecting available to buy on any airline.

Don’t get me wrong I don’t want pilots to be underpaid but this is a discussion between the pilots and the airline as a passenger I have bo interest being involved in. Still waiting for the email from the union or the company asking me as a passenger what I want out of the deal.

Not reflected on the schedule yet, but looks like AC recently zeroed out all LIM flights from YYZ/YUL for W23.

Also over the last few weeks WS has been gradually adding additional frequencies to various routes

YYC-YQM - Up to 6x weekly
YYC-YYG - Up to 5x weekly
YYC-BNA - Up to 6x weekly
YYC-YYT - Up to 9x weekly
YVR-ATL - Up to 8x weekly
YEG-YYT - Up to 6x weekly
YEG-YYG - Up to 2x weekly

YYC-CDG was also fully extended through winter, officially making it year-round. (Previously only went to Dec. 28 then resumed in April).

They also reduced NYC flying as well, with frequencies varying per week:
YYZ-LGA 5-6x weekly
YYC-JFK 6-7x weekly

I also see DL expanded its codeshare to include basically all WS Transborder routes (They weren't previously codesharing on flights to OGG / LIH / KOA)

Also YYC-AZA appears to have been removed, which isn't a surprise now that Flair is moving to PHX.

I don't disagree with you. I think what I was getting at is that relatively speaking it could have been worse. And I agree it should be both WestJet and the Union sending out apologies to the passengers. It is both their faults.

And before people come on here saying it was WestJet's fault all along and the pilots can't make a living I call BS. I too am a "professional" and I too started out at $40k per year but I can tell you that no matter how many years I work at my company I will never make $200k let alone $300k so I have no sympathy for the pilots and I feel I get paid well and am happy. And companies do not pay you based on where you work unless you're working somewhere obscure up north so pilots arguing "oh but I have to live near YYZ or YVR". That makes no difference to any employer. If you want the benefits of Vancouver you will have to live in a bungalow versus a large home but that is the tradeoff but your choice. Luckily you have that choice. Most don't. You could try and rent an apartment near LHR. Good luck.

It is a good thing that Flair made a lot of money from last-minute booking due to the WestJet problem.

It can use some of those funds to fund compensation for passengers that are denied boarding.

So a passenger books a Flair flight after it has been delayed into the next day. He shows up at the appropriate time and they board others but he is denied boarding due to some software problem where they can't assign a seat. Flair claims he does not deserve denied boarding compensation because the flight was not over booked and the computer system should not have let him buy the ticket. The tribunal concludes Flair has not shown sufficient proof the flight was not over booked so awards him the compensation.

If flair's computer system can't allow them to assign a seat to a passenger that they sold a ticket to then perhaps its time to buy a new computer system.

Looks like the tribunal is having nothing of this Flair nonsense.

What I find weird is this decision was made by the BC Human Rights Tribunal and not some transpiration tribunal. I guess they have authority. Interesting.

Then I guess you should have become a pilot.
