Global sporting retailer Decathlon is on an aggressive path of expanding the brand in Canada with upcoming store openings expected in Quebec, Calgary, Ontario and British Columbia.

Emily Manuel, Project Manager of Public Relations and Partnerships with Decathlon, said the retailer plans to open a store in Vancouver this year “which is a huge piece of news because we will finally be coast to coast.”

“We’re really excited about that and we have a couple of locations opening in Quebec. First will probably be Marché Central and then the next after that will probably be (CF Fairview) Pointe Claire and we also have an opening coming in Calgary (at CF Market Mall) and then another one in Toronto (Scarborough Town Centre),” she said. “All of these will be this year.”

The Vancouver location has not been confirmed yet.

Currently there are 15 stores in Canada.

“First in Vancouver we’ll have a pop-up store and then probably in 2024 we’ll have a full size store. The next store opening will be Marché Central. That will be the next flagship store that we’ll have opening,” said Manuel.

Tipping as an option does bother me, it's inherently classist, sexist, and racist all at the same time.

Look into the history of tipping, and modern tipping trends if you too want to be disgusted by the practice.

It needs to go.

I worked in a kitchen when I was younger and the meager tip out seemed like a nice bonus until I saw what the idiot servers were making.



Regardless I have no illusions as to how well they are paid for what amounts to an average customer service job requiring minimal education and training.

My son works as a busboy in a Yaletown restaurant and he makes over $300 per shift with tips.

Then people would need to be paid more and the base price of everything would go up. I am ok with that.

There is a level of stress to these “average” and “uneducated” jobs that goes beyond what many people can imagine. They deserve to make a living especially considering how much harder it has become to live off lower wages.

The BC government literally did just that, tipped jobs used to be paid less but now they must make at least minimum wage. There is no excuse for tipping in 2023.

IMO tipping is no different than charity. If you're not donating to your local food bank and your local homeless shelters, why are you donating to your local Starbucks barista?

The big tips come when restaurants host weddings or other large group parties, then are spilt among the staff.

Most BOH staff make very little hourly and most restaurants will promise that your wage will go up a certain amount as you will get tips, so they hire or entice people with tips to make the wage sound better.

Also most restaurants now the servers must tip out to the BOH staff a percentage that is based upon their food sales.

I don't like to tip for takeout or most fast food places and it can feel awkward when that option comes up and you feel like the person is watching you. And I often end up over tipping if the lowest option is high, like so many places the option that is set is often like 18% and than you have look for a lower option or enter it yourself and its just easier to go with what pops up. I also feel awkward when you tip nothing on the machine and the server can see that you tipped nothing but you leave a cash t ip but they may not know that at the time you are paying.

That someone working at Starbucks needs to go work a busser job in Yaletown, etc. Then they'll make a better wage. It's their choice to work at Starbucks with many many better paying vacant jobs available everywhere in the city.

What's next? A tip button at Walmart? Superstore?

It's not about what they deserve, it's why a certain subset feels entitled to tips that turn their lower end salary into something mid to high.

Nope, I've worked those jobs (the ones that society didn't deem fit to tip) and moved onwards and upwards.

Do you tip every minimum wage employee you encounter? Of course you don't. Get off your high horse already.

On the other hand, let's keep tipping culture. It means restaurants can pay their workers a lower wage and since I don't tip dreambrother808 will cover the difference for me!

I actually recommend dreambrother808 starts tipping Walmart, Translink, and CRA employees too so their labour costs don't get passed down to cheap consumers like me either!

I happily tipped when I still got drinks at the Balmoral. $5 got you two beers and some change. Bartender keeps the change. Sometimes you'd get just one glass and throw them back the toonie.
Being prompted for a tip at Subway however is another matter. Not my problem if they make up their financial slack on tips.

Just don't tip if you don't feel like it, no one is forcing you to. I don't see the issue.

I tip for good, personalized service with people whom I have a good relationship with - it covers more than sit down restaurants, but that's because I want to, not because I'm asked. I tip the nanny, she's fantastic with my kid. I tip my barber generously, he's done great work for me for years. I round up for my tailor who also gives great personalized service. However, I never tip on takeouts or any sort of simple transactions. Just punch through the stupid machine, hit zero, and be on your way. Cold day in hell if I ever tip at a Subway - heck it might be a cold day in hell if I eat at one really. What's the person going to do behind the counter to you? Nothing.

Tipping lets you make up your own mind on who deserves a few dollars or not.
