Doesn't "canal" imply that it's navigable for boat traffic? That seems like a tall order for downtown Winnipeg, though I would love for you to post any sketches you might have for it.

^I’d be good with that. I have to say I really don’t like that blank grey wall facing Sherbrook, and I’m worried about the materials looking cheap, but I really like the brick storefront. That is exactly what Sherbrook needs more of. It could be a great walking street. Given the challenges facing Winnipeg infill development, I’d be happy to see this get built.

Ya the big grey wall facing the front really could use a couple more windows. As it is, it looks identical to the backside facing the lane. All of the windows on this project look rather small and few and far between.

But other than the design criticism, it's a great project for the area. It's nice to have some narrow one-lot developments and not always larger condos that span multiple lots.

Agreed. Narrower is generally better from an urbanism perspective. It adds room for variety in uses as compared to the monoculture you get when a single building swallows up a quarter of the block or more.

Looks like Graham Construction is getting ready to start work on the Watt St housing project for Wahbung Abinoonjiiag Inc.

This will be built where some of the former Manitoba Housing was just south of Watt and Chalmers.

I'm very critical of new-build apartment layouts in this city.

They tend to be shoeboxes with a minimum of glazing on the short end, and windowless bedrooms. Developers will not build family-sized apartments because they are cost prohibitive. We end up with a downtown full of 1 bedroom/small 2 bedrooms, which also affects the potential of an area to become a diverse neighbourhood. The problem is badly exacerbated by the trend of converting office buildings with deep floorplates to residential.

Finding 3 bedroom apartments is a very tall task in this city, let alone 4. This makes housing extremely challenging for families who come to Winnipeg without the means to buy a SFH of their own right away (e.g. immigrants/refugees, families where one or both adults are students, families from rural towns and reserves). Quite often they have to settle for less than ideal housing situations as a result.

That’s why rowhouses are the best of both worlds. Glad that the city seems to be building more of them these days although wish there were more 4 bedrooms but understandable considering family sizes these days.

I wish they were Row houses like in Boston. Right to the street. And up 3 floors. Not these half baked ones that have one entrance in the center as they really are just condos in a row sharing a single entrance. Or the others that are set back so far they don't make a street presence. Have them to the street and everyone can still park in the back or have a little back yard. And we won't have to see it.

I'm living in Montreal for 2 months. And my word it is like I'm in a completely different universe. The row house walk-up things are everywhere and the neighbourghoods are awesome. I'm living in Saint Henri. So while they are not the most affordable, they are more affordable then some of the other around Sherbrooke. Gorgeous places.

Workers have removed the atrium around the old pony coral at 444 St. Mary Ave. Looks like almost the whole main floor of the building is being altered/reconfigured.
