They released the Airport Board agenda today. Noticed they have 4 gates opening in August 2023.

Actually, 4 new gates will open up on August 22, 2023. So the rest 13 gates will open up on October 31, 2023.

I find it interesting that the gates right across from the ones opening in 2024 are not opening for a year after that, and then there is the gate closest to the center opening in 2027.

I wonder if they are going to be extending the tunnel for the future concours C and that’s why?

Yes, they will construct a small segment of tunnel once the majority of B is complete. They don't expect to need the first half of C until the early 2050s, but they would like to get a move on with the prerequisite projects.

They should just make the whole tunnel now. Look at what the west tunnel — constructed 15 years prior — allowed the airport to do. It gave them options. And I know what they’ve said but I don’t think they’ll wait 30 more years to put in a train.

According to my Delta Pilot friend who flies their a330's, Delta is planning on retraining pilots and basing several a350's in SLC (as there is no space in Seattle or Los Angeles) for western US originating transpacific flights. Once gate capacity increases in the next year or two, and as the remaining 20 or so aircraft are delivered.

Daily Korean service is confirmed for next summer, the only thing holding it back until this point is gate capacity and available aircraft. Adding additional Seattle frequency by restructuring aircraft usage is a stopgap measure to meet demand for the western US until space and aircraft become available at SLC. There is the potential to start service from SLC to Haneda as well if capacity/demand proves viable.

It sounds as though service to Lima or Santiago is more dependent on gate capacity at their airports, rather than SLC. Although, there is not enough widebody capacity at salt lake currently either. European frequency is pretty maxed out at this point with up to 4 daily flights next summer to Amsterdam, London, Paris, and Frankfurt.

Also expect daily service to resume/be added to most remaining small-midsize cities in the eastern US currently not served by SLC as gate capacity doubles in the next few years.

I think you underestimate the size of the project underway right now. The New SLC is an absolutely massive airport. They may also want to pace growth since they will hit a hard ceiling with the geography-limited approach around the time they need Concourse C.

Again found myself spending the night in the airport because of a late flight. Explored the recently opened section of the South Concourse East.

Looking east from the Terminal Plaza.


I'll spare you pictures of the gate areas as they are exactly the same as what we've already got. Seats and equipment are installed and ready to go at the 4 south-facing gates scheduled to open in August.

Here's a shot of one of the rows of Concession space, nothing is open yet in the new area.


The information screens have an actual map underneath them.


For reference here's what they look like on the other half of the Concourse.


I really don't like the screen with a QR code to scan for a full map, adds unnecessary complication. Hope they bring the maps to the existing areas.

I still believe that Restrooms are the most underrated aspect of the new airport, they are huge and pretty much everywhere. Massive stalls with room for luggage, I can't think of another airport with this good of a bathroom game.

The long walk is pretty mild compared to other airports. I'm still sore about LAX's pushing of regular carriers to the new West Gates, the walk connecting the JetBlue code share to Hawaii from SLC is ~1.25 miles. Not only is our walk situation not that bad, it isn't permanent.

Cool update Paniolo Man. The airport is looking impressive. It almost seems like as quickly as they're coming along, by the time they're finished they will need to catch up with further needed expansion. I get the sense that SLC Intl. is going to become an even bigger world-class airport over the next 20 years than we might suspect. Im especially liking the numerous additions of public art. I think the Canyon 2.0 is going to be a beautiful space.

This digital postcard shot below isn't so bad, many are far worse as far as not being current. It's a nice touch vs. the typical gates and time signature. At least they have 111 S. Main and 99 West included. I have to laugh when I see some of those typically outdated "This is Salt Lake City" glamour shots. Whether it's for announcing a convention location, perhaps a news story backdrop, etc. I know it's probably only downtown development nerds like us that really notice it, but I wish they would just use those postcard promo shots that are current or at least semi-current.

I noticed this the other day in a newly released pricey ad for Grand America. It was an aerial being shot from the southwest. It was actually a stunning photo, which was meant to evoke a sense of how close Grand America is to the action of Downtown. Again, I realize I'm being nitpicky but from that particular angle and height, new construction would have been prominently featured. How much more impressive it would have been if they had included 95 S. State, Liberty, and Astra construction with cranes. Hopefully, when Astra is complete or at least the shell they will update the downtown promo photos they use to promote the city. I swear, there are still more than a few out there still using shots with the old original Key Bank Tower sans City Creek, 111, or 99 West. Forget about Hyatt or 95 S. State.

I imagine they'll just open up whenever their buildout is complete. Doubt they're waiting for a specific milestone date, just as their specific contractors can get the space done and (more importantly) they can hire staff for the location.
