The sad part is likely in the next 10-20 years the nearby houses will be bought, torn down and new apartments will rise. In hindsight this will look like a bad move IMO.

Aren't the majority of nearby residences low rental apartments/duplexes anyways? At least those that would impacted.

That's hard to say. I'm not necessarily against low density or SFH neighbourhoods close to downtown, and I think rezoning the old west end for higher density use would be very controversial. There is lots of land south of St. George Street on the other side of Vaughan Harvey, and also south of Main Street to satisfy Moncton's high density needs for decades. I think this should be the focus.

Having said this however, I was a strong proponent of height on this particular lot, just because of it's prominent location at Main & Vaughan Harvey. This is a lost opportunity to put an exclamation point on the western entry into the downtown core.

yeah, the old west end is one of the only neighbourhoods in Moncton thats suburban and has some unique character.

I'm disappointed its only 6 stories, but I also think the building will end up looking nicer than the render.

I agree. I'm at peace with the render. I think it is one of the better recent efforts by Spitfire, and, with the massing of the building, I think it will help convey the impression of added density to this corner.

I'm not so sure about the attempt at creating some green space along the sidewalk at the corner though.

Now, let's hope the Junction get's cracking on their own 10 storey building across the street!

It seems that everybody is in agreement that there should be a taller structure on this corner - except the developer and the tomato lady.

If going 14 floors would work financially but delay the project for a year, it would absolutely be more fitting; especially given the location. It's too bad that somebody couldn't talk to the developer and convince them of how important this is.

My comment is this: Until the Tomato lady Came along the project was 10 storeys and if she had not arrived it would have stayed 10 storeys. Then the project went to 6 or 10 storeys with her meddling. so we waited for a decision , Now 10 storeys is too expensive. Did they get cold feet?? Something funny iss going on!!

The city wanted a signature project on this corner and it falls short IMO

This is what I’m saying! The tomato people make a fuss and now all the sudden the original project is not viable unless its 6 storeys or 14 storeys. He should have to balls to build the best project possible and not let a couple of fussy NIMBYers change his mind.

I didn't get the sense from my emails with them, that council or the developers thought much of the hyperbolic BS coming from the leaders of these petitions. It seems that it was a truly economic decision. They want to get people in there ASAP lest some other global catastrophe changes the housing market yet again.

Moncton adding 33 surveillance cameras to downtown street
Council approves spending $90K for cameras along St. George Street
Shane Magee · CBC News · Posted: May 16, 2023 7:00 AM ADT | Last Updated: 5 hours ago
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/moncton-st-george-street-cameras-1.6844423

The street in question is St. George Street, long known for less-than-legal goings on. The addition of surveillance cameras alone will not solve the problem, and may displace some of the illegal activities to other neighbourhood streets, but, I consider this a positive move. One hopes they will put up even more cameras in the downtown core, and actively use any evidence acquired to vigorously prosecute the perpetrators, especially of drug related or property crimes, and of course crimes of violence.

O'Creek Brewing Company (175 Barker Street, Victory Industrial Park off Collishaw) is now open.

Mayor Dawn Arnold in her post said it was very busy there tonight. They have a kitchen (the Craft Canteen), so you can get good pub food to go along with your brewskis.

Almost everybody in the community were as well, except the NIMBY clan. Even John Wishart, the CEO of the Chamber of Commerce came out and urged the developer to stick with his plan of 10 floors, as new housing is crucial for Moncton. Maybe the city just chose the wrong developer.

<crickets><crickets><crickets>

In fact, the silence regarding all the approved projects in downtown Moncton waiting to break ground is becoming absolutely deafening.

That's the parking lot that the city traded to Galco for the Castle Manor lawn a few years ago. There was a condition in the agreement requiring Galco to develop the parking lot within a certain time frame and with a minimum valued project.

Galco received an 18 month extension in Dec. 2022, so they now have until June 2024. It would be great if they started the project this summer, but something tells me we won't see anything happening until next year.

MAGMA announced they are expanding to take over the entire Atrium Building at 22 Church. At an event this week their leadership said they've grown from ~20 staff before the influx of Syrian newcomers to ~100 currently.

I'm interested to learn where the United Way, Salvus, etc are going.

Hopefully this provides some revenue stability to Steve Gallant so he can focus on the Lutz/Robinson development.

MK Thai Gourmet will soon be opening in the former downtown Starbucks location on Main Street.

The windows are now uncovered, and the interior looks largely complete. There is temporary signage up.
