Soon the entire McBride Overpass deck will be removed and replaced over a weekend. They say late April which would be next weekend.

New overpass deck waiting just north of McBride:

3-day sendoff party proposed on B.C.’s historic Pattullo Bridge before teardown

Quote:
A New Westminster councillor is proposing a three-day goodbye party for the Pattullo Bridge, slated for decommissioning, that would actually take place on the bridge.

The motion, going before the city’s mayor and council on Monday night, states that the aging bridge is “an iconic part of the City of New Westminster’s history,” and the public should have a “unique opportunity” to experience it without vehicle and truck traffic.

“The Pattullo has been integral to the development and growth of the region, so it’s only fitting that the community gets to say good-bye as we look forward to its modern replacement,” Coun. Daniel Fontaine, who is proposing the party, said in a news release.

...

The existing Pattullo Bridge will remain open until its replacement is ready, then taken apart and removed.

“Before it’s taken apart, I hope we can get together as a region and celebrate,” said Fontaine.

...

Ideally, the party would take place on a three-day weekend with the bridge open for pedestrians and cyclists, while the new bridge is open to vehicle traffic, he added.

...

I think that’s a good idea. Having some food venders and games would also be nice for such an event.

They could even really take advantage of the surface area of the bridge and have things like a temporary go-cart circuit, basketball and tennis courts, and a running track for a charity 5k run. The possibilities are vast.

Tell me you haven't driven over the Pattullo Bridge without telling me you haven't driven over the Pattullo Bridge.

It's a friggin hill, there's nowhere flat that you could do any of this for (other than the 5k run, but it'd be a punishment).

I was out there easter weekend when they closed it to cars/trucks but still let pedestrians on. Can confirm it's a hill and councilor Fontaine's proposal is ridiculous as always and geared towards the optics of making city hall look bad for saying no to this. Hope they call his bluff and let him try to organize this.

I watched the council meeting last night, after three amendments I think they agreed to write a letter to MoTI and TransLink saying "yeah, we want some kind of goodbye celebration". I remember Councilor Campbell saying "we don't have the staff capacity to organize it" so I'm assuming it'll get kicked down the road and into the river somewhere.

Apparently MoTI already asked the city if they were interested in something, so this was basically saying "yeah we are interested but you can handle it", as far as I was able to tell.
