I'm definitely in the camp that believes the median quality of architecture in Vancouver has gone downhill since the aughts.

Other than the half-dozen ultra-luxury starchitect towers built/uc (none of which really contribute to a coherent west-coast aesthetic), the baseline has sort of fallen off for the rest of the market

"Typical" Vancouver circa 2005/2007, before they forgot about human scale and went the Toronto route

2018 "what's a pOdIuM?"

"Typical" Richmond circa 2007...

...in 2018

Gimme boring and uniform over these sad attempts at "interest" and "colour"

And don't get me started on the midrises...

If you hadn’t mentioned those were in Richmond, I would have assumed downtown Victoria or Olympic village.

Funny you mentioned mid-rises (those are actually low-rises) because I actually think the low-rises lately have a nicer look to them than most high rises which is funny considering the high rises tend to generate more revenue thus developers should be able to put said revenue back into the design. But that’s not the case. Because this is Vancouver. And if a developer can cut a corner and still make hundreds of millions, they will.

And you're getting bottom of the barrel construction quality. The deficiencies with this project are going to be epic. West bank is consistently shoddy, from Telus Gardens to Vancouver House and this will be the same no doubt.

Although, I will admit, they are very pretty to look at from the outside.

I'm surprised at the tall screen at the top of the non-market building.

It's starting to get quite noticeable behind 1477 Broadway from the Seawall, near 2nd Beach.

For one massive construction site, this is looking quite interesting. It's scale and form is very utopian.

Huge fire at the construction sit

https://twitter.com/ToXiTron/status/1665127193402396672

Seems like around the west side near the Civic Centre/Building 12. Black smoke and concrete construction site assume maybe some fuel stored on the site?

Hope no workers were hurt, it must have been a small head count for the site, being a Saturday.

But, fortunately, the fire wasn’t as severe as it looked. Gemmil says it appeared that construction materials in the court yard area of the site caught fire, which produced the heavy black smoke. The building itself was not involved in the fire.

That Twitter thread said it might have been void foam on fire.
