Here's one more Jitney photo. (also from a glass negative)

eBay

. . .with this description.

Overcrowded is right! And it looks like one of the older model jitnies.

Is . . . is that the Natick House upper right, beyond the streetlight?

If so, we're on Main, looking north toward the intersection with 1st.

With some difficulty, one can make out the name of the business on the left: New York (Hardware) Trading Co. which had an address of 111 S Main in the 1915 CD. So I'd say odinthor is spot on.

Excellent, odinthor and Loendoc! ..I appreciate your help.

When I happened upon this snapshot of a real Hollywood 'player' posed in front of the Mocambo nightclub in 1952 I thought the eBay seller's description meant that the suave dude was, in fact, Billy Daniels.

"Mocambo Restaurant Club Los Angeles CA Original Film Negative 1952 Billy Daniels"

eBay

He looks like someone who might have worked at Mickey Cohen's Haberbashery.

Here's a closer look.

Does anyone know what Billy Daniels looked like. . .could this be him?

I thought we had visited The Casbah nightclub on NLA but when I typed in "casbah" in the search function I received no hits.

It appears to be quite a place!

eBay

Judging by a small slice of Art Deco detailing still peeking out from the modernized atrociously remodeled building I'd say the building still stands. ..(compare to the postcard above)

Here's the reverse of the postcard.

A few months later this happened to 8401 So. Figueroa St.

Nov. 2017

And then this.

The building today has the same curved corner but I'm afraid it's an entirely different building.

Feb. 2020

Unless they kept the foundation.

I thought Pepe was just a character in Algiers. I had forgotten about the French film (aptly titled) Pepe le Moko.

................1937

Thanks for the article on the Casbah, GW. I appreciate it.

Now, how 'bout that Billy Daniels

Here's a mystery snapshot from the 'Mayhew' photograph album. (I've posted a few other snaphots from this album last month).

eBay

eBay

Not too many clues in this one

. . .except for Mary Miles Minter and her mother standing on the porch.

What an interesting room jutting out there on the left. It's all windows. I'm guessing it has a magnificent view.

Here he is with his then-wife, Martha Braun Daniels, at Los Angeles Airport in 1950:

LA Daily News Negatives at UCLA

After December 7, 1950, Daniels could be identified by a scar on his right cheek:

Quillan got out on bail:

But Daniels decided not to prosecute:

At least the scar wasn't too noticeable:

So, no, this is not Billy Daniels!

Great photo, though, thanks!

Looks like on the right of Daniels in the photo is Monty Hall and Mayor Tom Bradley.

Dayum, Flyingwedge! That's quite a salacious story about Billy Daniels getting his face slashed by 'actress' Ronnie Quillan. (it appears 'actress' -in this case- is a euphemisn for prostitute)

1957 SELF ADMITTED PROSTITUTE RONNIE QUILLAN DISCLOSES DESI ARNAZ AFFAIR

worthpoint

Ronnie Quillin talks to prosecution attorney William Ritzi (L) and Ca Pantaleoni (C) investigator from the office of district Attorney, during recess of the confidential magazine liberal trial.
Miss Quillan testified that she had an affair with Desi Arnaz in Palm Springs four years after he married Lucille Ball.........8-13-1957."

In 1957 “A cabdriver picked up her at 6 a.m. while she was wandering in front of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, wearing pajamas and a coat. She was carrying a stuffed dog named Bowie and a stolen
.38-caliber Colt. She said she wanted to go to a pawnshop–but he got one look at the — and took her to the police.”...Source

In fact, Quillin was such a hot mess L.A. Times' Larry Harnish created a Google map of her misbehavior. .. Here.

Actually it was FW who found the story...credit where cedit is due! Now I want to do a little tribute to unsung hero Nurse Elspeth Lightbody, if only because of her name. Seems she was practically a Times star in her own right.

Mar 5, 1949/May 2, 1950

Oct 25, 1953

Per the census, Nurse Lightbody was born Elspeth Macmurdo Lightbody in Glasgow in 1887 and arrived to live on a farm west of Scranton the next year. Never married, in 1950 she lived near LA High at 1062 S. Hudson Avenue with 64-year-old widow Margaret Gardner. Died at 85 in September 1972.

Hurray for Elspeth (Scottish for Elizabeth) Lightbody....Unsurprisingly Lightbody is Scottish as well. You can go here if you'd like to learn the origins of the surname.

Mystery location for a Sunday morning.

Possible clues?

There's an interesting faux 'Tudor' building down the street.

At the pump is a 1949 Dodge Business Coupe, AKA "Salesman's Special." I owned the soft top version, the Wayfarer. You could put a lawnmower in the trunk of that thing.

Cheers,

Earl

This was a fun one.

The intersection is Whittier Boulevard and Broadway in Whittier.

I found a Burnett's Service station in the 1960s Los Angeles CDs at 800 W Manchester, corner Hoover. But...

Looking closely at e_r's enlargement, there is a sign for a realtor named H. Frederick Les?? - the full name obscured by a post; there appears to be a street number (1727 W.) on the sign as well. Looking for H. Fred in the LA CDs was not helpful. But a search in the LAT found an H. Frederick Lesh in the realty business in Whittier. I then looked at the 1952 Whittier CD and found Burnett's Service Station at 1741 Whittier Blvd. and Lesh Real Estate at 1727 Whittier Blvd.

When I looked for these addresses in GSV, it kept showing me locations in Montebello. Could the streets in Whittier have been renumbered? Indeed they were in 1966, and 1741 Whittier became 11403 Whittier and 1727 became 11435.

After all this time (70ish years), the liquor store sign looks to be still there:
