In addition to the $330 M there’s also $30 M in provincial money for a community arena.
Smith was opposed to Edmonton getting any provincial money when she was in opposition. What happened?

Murray Edwards is laughing all the way to the bank. My hatred for CSEC has contributed to not watching Flames hockey anymore (along with no time due to babies and stupid cable packages). Unfortunately the NDP would be suicidal to oppose this now. At least it looks like there will be a redesign and no blank wall facing 12th Ave anymore.

Similar to the move from Northlands Coliseum to Rogers Place, the thing I will miss most is the heroin beer.

That is all.

Stampede Trail is the main drag, so that street will be more of a service road. There are buildings blocking the view from there as well.

Here’s hoping sanity prevails next month and we punt her ass out of office. If the Flames have a hissy fit then screw them.

We like to make fun of the Coyotes for attendance and playing in a little league arena, but at least the owners are paying almost the entire $2 billion for their new home.

Sadly, I don't see the NDP kiboshing the deal if they win. Would be a pretty spectacular way to immediately make the UCP the most popular party in Calgary again.

Though they should. Absolute absurdity that Calgary is getting provincial money when Edmonton didn't (or at all).

The 300 Million is not for there arena its for infrastructure in the area. Provincial money goes towards this kind of thing. I don't really get the outrage but whatever.

Is there some proof of this? I saw something yesterday about 200+ million from the province going towards the arena or its development.

Man Calgarians and Albertans you got bent and taken by Edwards sans lube lol. Sorry for the crudeness of my remarks but it's a pretty apt way to describe this deal.

Years ago, I remember many Calgarians on forums like CalgaryPuck poo-pooing publicly subsidized pro sports facilities in places like Edmonton and elsewhere...the taxpayer should not be subsidizing any of these facilities for rich billionaires! I would love to see how many of the same posters are now saying this is a fair deal for taxpayers. This has to be one of all-time fleecings with regards to pro sports stadiums and in Alberta no less - one of the wealthiest provinces in the country, with the highest average household incomes and arguably the corporate powerhouse of Western Canada. This is the best they could do in negotiating with Edwards?!

I also laugh at those that downplay the province's contribution saying that this was necessary infrastructure that would have happened anyways. Yeah, that parkade right next to the future arena would have been totally necessary without it...and no doubt, the Flames will probably derive all the parking revenue on game days and for all the concerts and other events taking place at the new arena.

The indoor/outdoor plaza will likely be unavailable to the general public for a significant portion of its existence...I wouldn't be surprised if there was an occasional cover charge there.

The "community" arena will likely be available to the public to use 10% of the time as it will almost certainly be utilized as a practice rink for the Flames/Hitmen/Wranglers. Meanwhile, many (or all?) of the street improvements related to vehicles/mass transit are happening to accommodate excess arena traffic that would not have otherwise existed.

I never thought it was possible for the corporate powerhouse of Calgary to get bilked worse than Edmonton and Quebec City for taxpayer dollars, yet those are the facts based on a preliminary glance at this deal.

You would think they would want to orient the new community towards the river. They could at least put some retail at the base of the parking garage.

No surprise. In Ontario, the GTA gets everything they want while Ottawa gets scraps. Ottawa only got $800k of a new $200 million affordable housing fund. Rural areas with a fraction of Ottawa's population got more money.

Did they list what the new seating capacity will be for Frank Clair Stadium 2.0? looks like can only squeeze in maybe 3000 extra seats on the one endzone for Grey Cups.

North Side would go down in capacity, from 14,000 to 11,200, so the overall capacity would go down from 24,000 to 21,200. There is some space for temporary, or future expansion, behind the planned North Stands and along the east (arena) end-zone, but we don't know the exact number.

The current Civic Centre has a capacity of just short of 10k, and the new arena will be 5.5k. The new arena will be buried between the east end-zone and the park portion of Lansdowne Park. It dose seem they will make the green roof accessible to the public now, while the initial concept only showed an edge walk.

Ottawa is really hemming in the stadium to the point where it is taking on a Percival Molson Stadium character. They couldn't get the arena any closer to the end zone on that one end... is that really necessary?

We are at the point where the stadium is going to have barely more than half the seating capacity it had in the late 80s, with little room for temporary expansion. Seems kind of short sighted, especially given that there is room to put the arena somewhere else on the site.

Also, send those arena plans to Winnipeg... we need a rink just like that!

Stampeders left out of arena conversations in Calgary (again)

The Calgary Stampeders have been held out of a major sports infrastructure development in the city. Again.

In August 2015, the reigning Grey Cup champions were 5-2 and fresh off a 48-3 demolition of the Ottawa Redblacks at McMahon Stadium, avenging an early-season loss.

CalgaryNext, a proposed $900 million downtown venue that would house Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation’s (CSEC) teams, was announced. The project would have provided the Stampeders and Flames with brand new facilities, replacing outdated buildings whose lack of amenities had worn out welcome with fans.

Less than a year later, facing ballooning material costs and sky-rocking environmental remediation costs on the proposed site, the project’s budget grew to an estimated $1.8 billion. CSEC and the city decide to cancel the deal when they couldn’t agree on which party would be responsible for covering the extra costs.

In 2021, a new arena deal was announced to replace the Calgary Saddledome, though it also collapsed under rising costs.

Cut to Tuesday when CSEC once again announced a deal for a new facility, again leaving the Stampeders out in the proverbial (and literal) cold at McMahon Stadium.

“We have the Fenway Park of the CFL and we have to change the narrative,” club vice-president of business operations Jay McNeil told the Go Stamps Go Show earlier this week. “McMahon Stadium is our home and it’s not going to change any time soon.”

Built in 1960 in 103 days for little more than a million dollars by the McMahon brothers after the province and city refused to fund the project, McMahon Stadium was donated to the University of Calgary and has undergone several expansions and renovations over the years to reach its current capacity of 35,650.

The venue has played host to five Grey Cups, the Winter Olympics opening and closing ceremonies, the World Police and Fire Games, an NHL Heritage Classic, and 62 seasons of CFL football.

“You talk about the tradition, the players who have come through there, and you look at the Wall of Fame. All those players have been a part of that history that belongs in that stadium,” said McNeil. “There are people who go to Boston specifically to go to Fenway park. Nobody’s coming to Calgary just to come to (McMahon) but let’s celebrate what we’ve got and start talking positively about it.”

McNeil recognizes that the old barn isn’t without its shortcomings, which include overcrowded concourses, a lack of concessions, seating that is difficult to reach for those with accessibility issues, and a shortage of bathrooms. He’s optimistic that some of these issues can be rectified before a new building is (hopefully) constructed someday.

“No professional sporting venue should have porta-potties and I’m investigating options to see if we can eliminate them. I’m hoping we can,” he said.

“We’ve got some changes planned for this year and we’ve got changes planned for next year already to make it a better spot. And to make it (a better) atmosphere on game day, we’re working to provide something that you can’t get on TV that when you come, you can only get at McMahon. It’s about creating that atmosphere.”

For now, it seems as though Stamps fans will have to be content with the “Fenway of the CFL” unless a new set of McMahon brothers is waiting in the wings to build a new facility.
