Nothing like an aerial shot to truly appreciate these towers. The Dale has some of the best views of Ottawa at the moment maybe only surpassed by the VIU 1 & 2

Five-ish more floors to go.

I love the height variation on the emerging Tunney's Pasture Skyline. It already has a nice look to it when viewed from Downtown, and it's only going to get better.

Tunney's big boys later this year will be :

105m Dale 1
99m RH Coats
96m Parkdale Collective
91m Dale 2
78m Jeanne Mance
67m Brooke Claxton

Dale 1 doesn't exist judging from my view (it is amazing how the Tunney's building blocks it completely) but Dale 2 is lit up at night now and very visible.

Coming home on the bus this week, we were struck by how good Dale 1 looks from the east. It really adds to the area. I'm looking forward to Dale 2 being on 'my' skyline as well. (And am still very thankful it doesn't block my view of the Peace Tower.)

Unpopular opinion but I don't get the hype around The Dale. Sure it's tall(ish) and prominent but I don't see the design or materials as being anything above average.

I see it as above OTTAWA average. I like it more than any other RLA designs besides Galleria and Soho Italia. That doesn't mean I love it though.

I think we share the same sentiment here. High quality for Ottawa. Certainly above average for RLA and maybe the best Brigil has been able to deliver, which isn't saying much.

Looking forward to seeing Dale 2 completed. It will be nice to see two towers that are clearly related in design and material, without being identical.

For my two cents, I'd say the penthouse at Cathedral Hill has the overall residential boss view in/of Ottawa presently.

I've never seen the view from the penthouse at Re Residences but I bet it's pretty spectacular too!

For view: I'd say the high up 'special suites' on floors 21, 22, 23 and 24 of Island Park Towers II (195 Clearview). There are also some on lower floors but without the far reaching views. These were built originally as bungalows in the sky to entice the Island Park Drive homeowners to stop fighting the development and come live above their old homes.

These apartments have better views than the penthouses because the penthouses are only on two sides of the building, whereas the special suites are across the west, north and east end.

From these special suites, one can clearly see to the south west, including that inflated indoor soccer field at Hunt Club and Greenbank, the Kanata Hill, up the river to Britannia Bay (and watch the sail boats out on Thursday nights), Aylmer, the Gatineaus, Bate Island, down the river to the rapids, Zibi, and then an amazing view of the city centre from the west including the Peace Tower and library, continuing south east, past Carleton and south to the airport (the higher floors can see more, it is amazing the difference 10m can make in how far you can see, but Harley already knows that!)

Every room has a view of the Ottawa River.

So I claim these are the best apartment views in Ottawa. But they are rentals, so one cannot own there.

(BTW: the inside of the apartments are crumbling plaster walls and ceilings, leaking 55 year old windows, water damaged parquet floors and tile floors full of cracks from the swaying of the building. But the visitors don't see that, they only see the views.)

Hype? I've never heard a single person hype the Dale. You're on an architectural forum. People talk about buildings.

You made an awesome write-up, and views are subjective, but setting aside downtown landmark proximity, if that Clearview area setting is what your preference of scenery is, there can be no doubt that the Metropole penthouses (half floor units with >300 degree views) and other high floor wraparound 3-elevation units are more than a big one-up on the Clearview Avenue Island Park Towers. The Barclay north west corner units have the best up-close expansive apartment river views in that area if that's the main criteria (you have to go out of you way to look down and see the road), and as a bonus, the north west corner units of the Barclay have a little bump-out to the northwest corner, so they get a similar far away downtown view to the east.

Ooof now I'm 'Sidetracked' too. ha

You are right about views are subjective. The Metropole and Barclay both include IPT in their views (more-so for Metropole where it dominates the northern part of that 300 degree penthouse view.)

It was the Skyscraper forums that taught me what I described as communist concrete building is in fact Brutalist Architecture.

No matter the name, I hate it and any of the north end apartments in 195 Clearview (and the south and west in 200 and the east in 185) benefit greatly by not having the other IPT buildings in their view!

I used to think the Metropole penthouses would have an amazing view, then one was for sale and I was struck by how 200 Clearview dominated their view. (Obviously, someone who doesn't hate Brutalist as I do, might not even notice the building.) Conversely, those on the south side of the IPT buildings have their view dominated by the Metropole. Which, since I think it is one of the most beautiful buildings in Ottawa, is not a disadvantage to my way of thinking.

Edited to add: the forward-thinking of the site plan of the Metropol mean few apartments have a view dominated by 1960 Scott. If 1976 isn't as awful, then they'll have dodged that bullet!
