Because CPD is hitting the limits of operational capacity and the courts and state department have not.

I give lots of leeway to organizations that are understaffed since humans are average and not superheroes, and the harshest criticism for overstaffed organizations.

If CPD were staffed higher than 2019, I would be more critical, but it’s the opposite.

“Efficiency” and “plans” are just buzzwords and stamping of feet, since in practice it’s just a euphemism for mandatory overtime. Which I also oppose when used in excess against employees.

I agree. Most of the public were just waiting for post-election proof out of politeness. Here it is, and now commences the opposition with an uproar.

What a load of unadulterated —! First off all, how the hell do you know the "real" opinion? Secondly, are you seriously defending the aspect lack of CPD actually doing it's freaking job???

Who's "them"? Actual CPD officers paroling CTA, or the joke of security the city hired? Big difference.

[QUOTE=galleyfox;9922925]I think they have been set up to fail, and progressives when talking about crime and police are as irrational and self-destructive as Republicans talking about their —.

For example, South Chicago just had a heinous double murder the other day. The culprit was a convicted murderer out on electronic monitoring for another illegal — violation. And to nobody’s surprise he murdered his ex and her boyfriend and probably would have killed her children.

That’s not an exception. It’s common. Almost every person arrested for murder has a lengthy violent felony record.

Then, the city’s prosecutors often let crimes like theft, assault and even carjacking go unpunished until they inevitably escalate. Whether murder or rioting.

Meanwhile CPD objectively has had lower staffing since 2019, has objectively had to work double shifts and other overtime, and objectively had scheduled days off. No extra hiring to cover CTA stations and deter rioters.

Yet the police are all bad. Everything is their fault. The courts and prosecutors and politicians deserve no blame whatsoever. Root causes.[/QUOTE

Absolutely nobody defends the stupidity of Kim Foxx and the rest of the DA's office, don't you dare use that to defend CPDs ineptness. It's true that both systems need major reforms. BOTH! We need major reforms within the police AND the DA's office!]

Johnson also told reporters he disagrees w/criticism of his call to not "demonize youth" after Loop gatherings this wknd: “Have you ever taught middle school? I have. Have you ever raised young people? Do you understand the risk that young people take just because they’re young?”

Johnson continued: “Sometimes they make silly decisions. They do. And so we have to make sure that we are investing to make sure that young people know that they are supported.”
Johnson really does seem to think that teaching middle school for a few years over a decade ago has bestowed upon him a wisdom unattainable for everyone else. Very weird. Does this guy not see a difference between beating random passersby and maybe drinking too much in your friend's parents' basement?

How is nobody calling him out for (IMO) offensively lumping all of Chicago's teens together with the tiny minority who engaged in violent criminality this past weekend?

At the end of the day Johnson is our mayor. He's not my first choice, but because I want to city to succeed, I want him to do the same. While I don't necessarily agree with his comments, nothing in them entailed any action that he would take in the same predicament, therefore I rather hold him accountable to the action he does take.

It's just telling the truth.
It's pretty simple to be realistic while also being compassionate, though. That's what I'm taking issue with in this whole thing. BJ's ludicrous response is so tone deaf I wonder if he's mentally well. Clearly the behavior of those involved in the riots last weekend are ABHORENT and they should be arrested. But we can also acknowledge that if a kid is exhibiting sociopathic behavior there are still interventions that can maybe take place to help them. No 15 year old is doing what we saw in those videos unless they have experienced severe trauma, which I don't think is unreasonable to assume about the vast majority of minors who drift towards a life of violent crime.

Both things can be true: arrest and punish violent kids, invest in programs that can begin to treat them once they are off the street. BJ's version of compassion seems to be leaving these kids in absolutely devastating situations in gang-infested neighborhoods surrounded by constant threats of physical and mental danger while hoping they show up for free pizza at a to-be-built rec center on a Saturday night.

Johnson is a lunatic but so are many of his white leftist supporters.

Our city's out of control crime is the worldwide embarrassment. Why didn't Lightfoot order the police to crack some heads and make mass arrests?

Our newly elected mayor who can't acknowledge criminal behavior is even more embarrassing.

Yep - He sure does.

I pointed this out in one of the early debates he had with Vallas. When the topic of public safety was brought up, he continuously tried to suggest that he understands the dangers cops go through because of his experience as a teacher.

He's a smug woke politician who thinks he knows what's best for the rest of the city based of his limited world view. The problem was that too many other far-left liberals share the same narcissistic mindset - So he got just enough votes to set him over the top.

Seriously? So the mayor has to literally ORDER our police to do their jobs? Sounds like you have a lower opinion of CPD than I do!

Berwyn Illinois Police Department ^ | April 19 2023 | Berwyn Police Dept

COMMUNITY ALERT The Berwyn Police Department has received credible intelligence which suggests that a large gathering is being planned to take place this Saturday, April 22nd, during the afternoon and evening hours in the area of the North Riverside Park Mall. This gathering, much like what was reported on in the City of Chicago last weekend, has the potential for public disturbances and acts of violence. The Berwyn Police Department has been in contact with North Riverside and other neighboring jurisdictions to mitigate this potential. Preventative measures are currently being implemented, as well as preparations for a unified response on Saturday. We ask all Berwyn residents to remain vigilant, and report any suspicious activity that might be related to this gathering to the Berwyn Police Department. In an effort to keep your children, young adults, and families safe, please consider this advisory before making any plans near the North Riverside Park Mall on Saturday. The Berwyn Police Department is committed to collaborating with neighboring agencies to keep our community safe. We will be working to swiftly disperse participants, and ask you to avoid this area if at all possible
...

Why don't we just turn this site into citizen or nextdoor?
Or, let's just go for 4chan.

I seriously think people are putting blame on the wrong people/departments.
I blame criminals for crime.

We need a Daley like mayor.

Lmao sure, this is helpful.

It doesn’t make for a very productive conversation when the two options seem to be either these kids are sub-human animals that need to be shot or else they are misunderstood rapscallions just looking for a little weekend fun and should therefore be excused of all consequences.

Of course all discussion will devolve into hyperbolic nonsense when these are the two starting positions.

^It's not about living or not living in a society that tolerates it. . . it's about standing up and holding these — cunts accountable for their inaction. . . before someone with an itchy trigger finger makes the problem worse. . .

(and I'm not holding out for things to get any better before they get worse)

Wow. I took a break from this — show and you all are still going... I really would expect the moderators to be shifting the conversation instead of fanning the flames here.

Any chance we can change the subject to the news today? I would expect many people would be comforted by the choice of Rich Guidice as Chief of Staff.

Quote:
“How do you survive City Hall after multiple administrations? By building relationships across departments,” Lee said. “By learning how to use soft influence to get things done. At different points in his career, he didn’t have full authority. But he was able to build relationships, understand systems and move things even before he was in that commissioner position.

“That type of collaborative spirit will serve him well as he’s trying to direct departments,” Lee said. “He seemed to have a good understanding of what motivates people in city government, particularly levels of mid-management and below. That level of motivation and what inspires people to act is really important.”

[...]

During the interview process, Guidice “told a lot of stories” about opportunities he’s had to make a real difference in peoples’ lives,” Lee said.

The task force created to tamp down a surge of carjackings was a classic example.

“When he started this, the time between when your car was taken and when you got it back was averaging well over 120 hours. And he was able to, by working with various partners, get that recovery time down to about 55 hours,” Lee said.
