(and there are tons of cops downtown all the time, usually one on my corner, sitting in their SUV watching netflix or whatever).
Flex = Moving units out of neighborhoods on weekend nights during the Summer when crime is at its peak and mandating excessive overtime and cancelling scheduled days off for a force that has rapid attrition.

Otherwise praying that the random weekends when they keep more units in neighborhoods instead of downtown don’t blow up since there are plenty of false alarms don’t pan out.

That’s not sustainable.

I think perhaps CPD has too many sworn officers doing administrative jobs.
i was looking at LAPD numbers and they have have just under 10k officers patrolling a land area twice as big as Chicago and with over a million more citizens and sharing many of the same historic crime issues. Chicago is more lik 12k sworn offices and 1k unsworn positions.

Dont know how much overtime they use though.

Overtime costs for LAPD were about the same as Chicago last year.

In my opinion, the most important statistic for violent crime is the number of active gang members living in a city. Not area, not total population. (Petty crime and theft is another story) Just how many gang members, and how fast are they recruiting.

Unfortunately for comparison’s sake, LA hasn’t released estimates since 2005 at which time it was 40K. It’s almost certainly lower than that by now. The estimate for Chicago is 115-120K gang members as of 2020.

So despite the LAPD being down 800 officers and using overtime, I think they have a lot more real flexibility.

I’m guessing you’re using the city’s gang database, which is very flawed.

I’m going by what cities have reported to the public. I’m sure the NYC and LA databases also have similar flaws, and I’m also sure they’re all correct that Chicago has a population of gang members that is several magnitudes higher than either LA or NYC.

^ Flawed or not, I think it's pretty clear that Chicago suffers from having the largest aggregate # of gangbangers out of all US cities.

I mean, the total homicides, total shootings, and general all-around violent lawlessness compared against the other largest cities bear this out.

And it's sadly been this way for like 6 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 decades now.

Tens of thousands of mostly young, black, male lives mowed down by the game.

AND.

NOTHING.

EVER.

CHANGES.

^^That desk sergeant should be fired. This stupid "soft strike" 🞵🞵🞵🞵 started back in 2016 and it hasn't really gotten better yet. Absolutely ridiculous. I personally thought Vallas was the better candidate, but this logic is out of hand. Many cops are basically trying to hold the city hostage until they get their candiate. That's absurd and entirely unprofessional. I can see why cops feel like they've been under constant attack from politicians and the media, but to whine about it and pout about for years is insane. Despicable.

I'll never excuse the logic of the rioters, but cops in this city need serious reform and new leadership. At the very least so that more of them do their job.

No doubt some will keep making excuses for CPD. This shows us that they were in fact there and had the manpower to actual do something. They chose not to. Anyone who lives in the city has had an experience like this. Probably why the "more cops" guy didn't win the election.

Dennis says what frustrates her the most was that she didn’t receive any help from Chicago police.

“I literally went in front of a police car that I saw coming, like literally stood in front of their car, and I was like ‘stop! There’s people over here getting assaulted,’ and he looked, there were four police officers in the car. The driver looked, and he just cut a path and drove around me,” she said.

“They didn’t stop. Who knows what would have happened if it wasn’t for her,” Garrisson-Johnson added.

^^ ^ A million times this.

The cultural, institutional rot within the CPD is an intergalactic disgrace.

Is it beyond reform?

'They said they were going to kill us': Couple attacked by teens in Chicago speaks out

By Anthony Ponce April 18, 2023 4:09PMLoopFOX 32 Chicago

A man and a woman whose brutal beating in downtown Chicago went viral over the weekend is sharing their story, along with the citizen who came to their aid.

CHICAGO - A couple who was violently assaulted by a mob of teenagers over the weekend in downtown Chicago is speaking out about the terrifying experience.

The video of 20-year-old Ashley and 22-year-old DJ being attacked in the 100 block of North Wabash Ave. has gone viral. They say they had just left Nordstrom shortly after 8 p.m. on Saturday when they were confronted and assaulted outside the Macy's entrance.

"We were in downtown Chicago trying to shop, trying to get some food, and were walking down the street and there was a really big group of guys, a really big group of people, guys and girls. DJ had my hand trying to lead me through the crowd of people and they pushed him, they pushed me, and as soon as they pushed me I told DJ, ‘They just shoved me.’ And he was like, ‘Don't shove her, who shoved her?’ And as soon as he said that, everything went crazy," Ashley recalled.

"They said they were going to kill us. They turned around and started fighting. I got pushed down to the ground and the whole group went to DJ and not to me. I have a whole lot less injuries than he does because I was more of a bystander than anything. But everyone went for him and ended up in the middle of the street. They were jumping him in the middle of the street. It got pretty bad," Ashley said.

Chicago police say the offenders stole property from the victims before continuing on their way.

"It was a group, a mob, of about 60 to 100 people," said Lenora Dennis, a Chicago citizen and Good Samaritan who was nearby and tried to protect Ashley and DJ from the attackers after she said police did not come to their aid.

...

Dennis was eventually able to get the couple into her car. She then drove them to the police station to file a report.

"I got told by the desk sergeant that this was going to happen, and that this was going to keep happening because Brandon Johnson got elected," said Dennis. "That floored me."

Dennis said an ambulance then took the couple to the hospital, but the couple was without their phones, wallets, and shoes — all of which had been stolen during the attack.

"I told the couple that I was going to go home to find them some shoes so that they wouldn't be barefoot for the rest of the night," said Dennis, who tells FOX 32 the couple was staying at an Airbnb for the night.

...
The weekends violent riots are international news. Videos of the violent assaults and outright chaos are viral. Can't wait to get the 🞵🞵🞵🞵 out of here.

I have put so much time and money into this city. Literally decades and hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes and investment. Let the leftists have it. Excuses for criminals, excuses for a failed education system, never blaming the people that cause the mess.

I'm not going to defend the corruption in this city - No doubt we have massive issues we need to solve, but it's not like the grass is greener on the other side. Unless you plan on leaving American urban enclaves all together, other cities are having massive crime issues too.....

Again - Not to suggest we shouldn't be doing everything we can to address the struggles of Chicago, I still love to call this city home. I am pessimistic of Johnson, but Chicago transcends mayors....

Yes some bystander was able to help but the cpd are apparently too shaken off by the mayor's election to do their job (and they'd have just found another excuse if Vallas won, they've been doing this since Emmanuel). Hope all then MAGAts make good on their promise to quit, it's not like they're doing anything useful anyways and maybe they can be replaced by cops who give a 🞵🞵🞵🞵.

Could you imagine the leftist outcry if a cop touched one of these youths? You get what you vote for, enjoy.

And not a word from about the $30K/kid annually spent at CPS for complete failure.

Complete strawman arguments. This has nothing to do with CPS (a weekend night) or Johnson (hasn't been sworn in yet). You are making excuses for the police. They have the budget and police were in the vicinity (as proven by the articles posted).

Comments like your just help give CPD cover. You complain about how nobody gets "blamed" then do everything you can to avoid calling out CPD.

I'm in the same boat as you.

But as a 6th generation Chicagoan now raising my family's 7th generation in the city, my commitment is 1 billion % unshakeable.

I feel the ghosts of my ancestors alongside me every time I stroll down Lincoln.

I will never surrender this city to the leftists.

Or to anyone else.

Ever.

Even if I'm the very single last 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 living in Chicago.

It was an extremely close-🞵🞵🞵 election, and unfortunately the dipshit candidate squeaked out a win.

These things happen.

These things can also change.

Yeah. . . this is kind of how I feel about things too. . . but I knew that going into it when I moved here 30 years ago. . . having grown up in Chicagoland the stories of crime and corruption were on the nightly news all through the 1980s and yet that didn't stop me from moving here. . .

One thing to remember is a) this is happening in one form or another in just about every other major city in the U.S. and b) in the grand scheme of things it's an isolated incident. . .

I also find it helpful to not focus on the dumb 🞵🞵🞵🞵 that makes headlines and go about my day as I always do minding my own business and enjoying the things that living in the middle of a great city offers. . .

It's not like I'm going to move to the 'burbs, another city with it's own set of problems or Germany. . .

. . .
