I never went because REI was overpriced stuff I couldn’t afford. So, shrug.

What about Walmart? Macy’s? Eddie Bauer? Loft (my wife’s complaint today), the Nike outlet store? This runs across the income spectrum. All these have closed recently, most due to crime issues. And god forbid we care about the loss of jobs associated with these closings, must be in the thousands now. Hard to afford a place to live with zero income.

I hate to see this, but also hard to believe their bottom line is that fragile if it's otherwise a very successful store. Was it really getting broken into that often? Sad.

Walmart did not close because of crime. Maybe you were listening to the governor of Texas saying that and got confused. As for the other places? Inflation is a major issue. More expensive merchandise is harder to sell under such circumstances. Other than Walmart, these are not cheap places. And Macy’s has more to do with the death of malls than any crime.

It’s really quite devastating. Hopefully this is the last straw for the city and they crackdown hard on crime.

I mean what’s the worst that could happen? Things get better?

Yep, we definitely need more social workers and mental health workers. Not cops.

must be the case

They officially never said why they closed both Portland stores. Just a short vague statement on “financial reasons”, which can means lots of stuff, theft included.

They did cite crime. They said being here for over 20 years it’s the worst it’s gotten.

No, that was the right wing media citing the “increase in theft.”

“Walmart did not cite a reason for the closures.”

That’s not true. Walmart is continually closing stores due to lack of profitability period more closed in Chicago area today. Macys is dying period. Eddie Bauer is continually closing stores nationally. Both Macy's and Nike closed their downtown Seattle stores. There is only one thing corporate America is concerned with. It ain’t equity or their employees well being. It’s profitability and they will manipulate the truth to get what they want

Yeah, this is honestly a really scary turning point. I was starting to be more optimistic about the city, but for such a big anchor to leave one of the wealthier areas of the city just seems to feel like a point of no return. It feels like too little has been done to address warning signs, and now it's clear immediate action is needed but there just isn't the method to provide it. Before, I would have said Portland would recover in a few years especially with the new city government in place. Now, I would put it in decades.

Our government is full of stooges trying to increase police presence when there’s proof that doesn’t work and just puts people of color in danger of severe discrimination. Again, REI did not fail because of crime. It failed because it was an overpriced business model. This isn’t an indicator of Portland dying; it’s an indicator that big businesses 🞵🞵🞵🞵. Hopefully, they’ll lower the rent for that space and get a good local business in there with time. The sky is NOT falling.

What are you talking about? REI has not “failed”—they have three other stores in the Portland metro area. They are closing their Pearl District store because of crime.

I feel more for the vandalism that is constantly happening - smashing windows etc... by drugged-out freaks.

But REI, not so much. It's manipulation. Also cited besides 'crime' is the fact that they are having a dispute with their landlord.

Do you think it would have been better if the building was taller?

Yes, but CRIME!!!

And as for “drugged-out freaks,” as someone who has worked with people who deal with addiction, this is not a nice way to say this. I know you probably don’t care, but I will defend the lowest amongst us.
