Dream is not on the flats. It isn’t even on the mainland. Trinity is a pipe dream. The Claridge towers in the park have been under construction for decades and haven’t changed the dead zone of the flats because towers in the park are useless from an urban planning perspective.

Not sure where the 2km is coming from. My google maps says anywhere between 1 and 1.4 km, depending on where you are in Zibi.

What are you smoking?? The new dream development is literally called 'Dream Lebreton Flats', Trinity just spent a million dollars on a transit bridge to their future development, and the Claridge plot plans are dense with development aside from Pindigen Park and in no way could be described as 'Towers in the Park' style developments after it's built out.

I said less than 2k!! google map literally says it takes 15 min from a central point on the chaudiere island to approximately where the library is for a walk and 4min on a bike.

They can call the North Glebe if they want, it is not on the Lebreton Flats, which are on the mainland.

Who says that bridge is being built by Trinity? On city documents it is just one of the pedestrian bridges being built for the project.

Claridge has postponed the buildings on the street, probably for a long time. For the foreseeable future it is all towers in a park.

Dream, who is building zibi, is also building a Lebreton Flats Parcel, starting shortly, at Booth and Albert. Thats pretty mainland to me...

OHHHHH you don't know that Dream is building another project on the flats directly adjacent to the library, you've been referring to their Zibi project! That makes more sense, I was wondering what the hell you were talking about

Trinity paid for that bridge. I don't feel like rooting through the thread for that development for proof, but I can tell you with absolute confidence that they did.

Claridge is building towers near parks, but nothing about their plan is representative of Le Corbusier's 'Towers in the Park' design philosophy. They are part of the overall mixed use plan for the area, and are not designed to be low cost simple accommodation for the working class.

I agree with many of you. I think the lot adjacent to Pimisi would have been better in terms of accessibility (Dream towers). Alterna Savings (Main+Main towers) or the Technical High School were also great spots, closer the CBD, but still within the residential area of Downtown. It would have added a destination to an area of town that is mostly dead outside of business hours.

That said, the current location is also good, bridging the gap between the old Downtown and the emerging Downtown (LeBreton). It's location on the hill might also make it visible from the Portage Bridge/Victoria Island and Zibi areas at certain angles since it's between the Escarpment and Claridge Flats.

For sure, I was hoping for an indoor walkway between from Pimisi, through the Dream towers, whatever OCH development may come and the library, but that seems unlikely now. I do hope some sort of covered walkway might still be possible in the future.

Not that I disagree with anything you wrote but "emerging downtown" seems wildly optimistic.

Doesn't seem wildy optimistic to me. I believe anyone visiting this city in 10+ years will look at the city and assume the line of towers stretching from Dow's Lake to the flats along the O-Train trench is 'Downtown'.

I’ll agree with YOWetal on this. I don’t consider a cluster of residential towers to be a ‘Downtown’. It will simply be an inner suburb – albeit, a more vertical one.

For example, in an aerial view of Toronto you will see groups of (primarily) residential towers over and surrounding many subway stations, but that doesn’t make each station ‘Downtown’. Closer to home, the several towers in the New Orchard area doesn’t make New Orchard part of ‘Downtown’.

Sure, the new neighbourhood will be beside Ottawa’s traditional core, but that doesn’t make it part of ‘Downtown’. Honestly, when I go ‘Downtown’, I am not headed for the corner of Bronson and Laurier. Even though there are apartment towers there, I don’t think of it as ‘Downtown’ – and I don’t feel that I would be alone in that thinking.

I fear that some people are really expecting way too much from a bunch of new apartment towers at LeBreton Flats.

But it wont be just residential tower next to downtown its gonna be where the new Central Library will be its where the War Museum is, its where the best war memorial in the region is (holocaust) its where the most used Riverfront trail is, its where a potential hockey arena/event centre would be, its where 2 line of public transit meet. Its not a stretch to say Lebreton will be an expansion of downtown in the west just like i think Rideau centre and the market is the extension to the east.

Nah, we will come up with cool names for our multiple downtowns. CBD-W (lebreton), CBD-C (core or central)/SOPA, CBD-E/byward.

I see this similarly to the evolution of Montreal. We had Old Montreal, the original Downtown, then it shifted north in the 1960s with Place Ville-Marie built over the tracks, Tour de La Bourse, CIBC. In the 70s, it expanded east towards Complex Desjardins. Over the last decade, growth around the Bell Centre has created a further shift west.

What was Downtown Montreal in the 20s, 60s, 90s and today has changed dramatically. I see the same in Ottawa, where it went from Parliament, Sparks and the Market in the early 20th Century, shifted west and south with the construction of Place de Ville, Place Bell and L'Esplanade Laurier. In the next 10-20 years, that will expand to Bayview. Especially in a post-pandemic world, the meaning of "Downtown" won't be the same as it once was (office towers).

More than anything I`m excited to see this library help to animate the West side of downtown. It has always been a complete dead zone outside of office hours. I see myself spending lazy sunday afternoons here reading after hitting a cafe.

The library is gonna be quite prominent from the park at this angle! Framed by the arched bridge in the foreground! Can't wait to see it completed

The lot across the street from the library might have towers too, which could help break the tabletop effect I think.

And also, I know it 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 we also have to rely on Claridge but that 55 or 60 floor tower in their East Flats plan is also going to help with that now that I think about it.

That one has been reduced to 45 floors and being Claridge who knows what they'll actually build.
