... Sorry, just really excited.

Walt Disney Animation Opens New Vancouver Studio for Long-Form Series Production

link

Walt Disney Animation Studios is opening a new production facility in Vancouver, British Columbia, as it ramps up its streaming offerings.

Focusing on long-form series like the upcoming musical revisiting of “Moana,” the studio will recruit new talent for its feature-quality slate and special projects meant exclusively for Disney Plus, it was announced Wednesday by WDAS President Clark Spencer.

Back in Burbank, the flagship animation studio will expand its over 900 employees and remain the exclusive home for film projects, as well as shorter form series such as the recently announced “Baymax” and “Zootopia+.” Story development, storyboarding and production design for all projects will be based in Burbank.

“Disney Animation is creating more original storytelling for Disney+, expanding into series for the first time in our history with ‘Iwájú,’ ‘Tiana,’ ‘Moana,’ ‘Baymax’ and ‘Zootopia+,’” said WDAS chief creative officer Jennifer Lee. “As we continue to grow our original slate of projects, there are more creative, artistic and technological opportunities than at any previous time.....”

You can probably pin it to the Canadian dollar hitting parity again.

That, and Vancouver is Hollywood North. Pretty big CGI talent pool here.

Great news for the industry. I am still sad about Pixar leaving so soon after they opened here few years ago. Anyone have any insight what really went down with that one?

Far as I can tell, it was for internal reasons. MPC left too... because they're cheap, slave-driving bastards and wanted to outsource to India.

By contrast, Sony set up around the same time as Pixar, and they're still here.

That's why they rent everything in their offices so they can shut up operations quickly.

Any idea where their studio will be located?

NGL, I skimmed over the article to try and find an address of some sort so I do apologize if the answer is obvious.

No they didn't announce anything. You assume if they don't go to the False Creek Flats or Mount Pleasant then they'll end up downtown.

Article only says Jan 2022 opening, no mention of size in persons or sqft either.

Bridge Studios with another new location at Lake City Way & Lougheed (NW corner), replacing the existing foodstuff warehouses.

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/brid...ty-way-burnaby

-340,000 sqft of soundstages
-330,000 sqft of support space
-150,000 sqft of office space

Site clearing on the forested area of the site has already started.

Also no word on the Disney studio but they do have plenty of jobs posted.https://jobs.disneycareers.com/locat...9050-6173331/4

Makes perfect sense, TLOU was set mostly in the Midwest so Alberta was the right stand in.

TLOU Part 2 was set mostly in the PNW and California so Vancouver is the right stand this time.

The million-dollar question: will they still kill off you-know-who?

We're not making GoT, they don't have to make it up as they go. I assume the plot stays the same (but who knows if they decide to continue past Part 2?)

TLOU2 was such a heavy game. It's pitch black, and probably my favourite story in any video game ever (tied with Red Dead Redemption 2, maybe).

Season 2 is going to be brutal.

Firewatch, Outer Wilds and SOMA are up there for story too... but you can't really convert those to TV. Mass Effect and Dragon Age, maybe.

If they follow the game, it's gonna hit hard (if you know what I mean).

Yes, this was inevitable. They also cast Season 1 largely out of Vancouver.

I've been waiting for a Starcraft adaptation for years and years, now that is a story made for television. With the LED video walls the studios have now, it feels much more viable but we'll see.

I'd also appreciate if it got the HBO treatment like TLOU is getting, I need more dark gritty TV shows in my life. (And Pablo Pascal would make a great Jim Raynor too hmm...)

Maybe. Remember that the Warcraft movie bombed, so even if there's a bigger market for Starcraft once ActiBlizz's whole house cleaning/merger thing is finished, Microsoft may or may not be interested.
