IMO, extend both 8th & 9th to be connected across Northside Drive and install traffic lights at the intersections.

If Tech doesn’t want more cars accessing or cutting through campus, make the ingress/egress to campus bollards so pedestrians and cyclists can filter through at ease, while cars cannot.

Much cheaper & more functional than an unnecessary bridge.

100% agree, with good bike/ped infrastructure and traffic calming measures. Unfortunately GDOT controls Northside and we've seen that they're prefer to turn it into a 7 lane traffic sewer. Last year (or was it 2021?) a pedestrian was seriously injured at 10th and Northside. It feels like Russian roulette crossing that intersection. Hopefully the design of this new dorm opens up Tech's campus to the west. They've done such a good job with Tech Square so it's odd that the west side of campus remains closed-off.

Blame the developers that are building everything in that area. They are the ones labeling it Upper Westside. I don't really have a problem with it especially because it extends past West Midtown. There are parts like Bolton and Underwood Hills that you could call West Buckhead. The old names work too but Upper Westside is more descriptive and encompasses a greater area than each old neighborhood. In my opinion the water treatment plant is the border between West Midtown and Upper Westside.

Oops

Where is this? Ironically, it looks like this likely exceeds the maximum size/height for temporary signs in res neighborhoods, manipulating the sign ordinance to maximize hysteria, creating excess (visual) congestion and unsafe conditions for existing residents.

...But it is hard to tell from the pic.

I live across the street from this one and it could stand to be a few floors higher still. The 80s Era townhomes where the sign is located are the outlier for the this part of Midtown and it's future.

Their scale drawing of its neighbors conveniently leaves out the 35-story condo tower across the street.

I'd like to see the study that backs up their claims. Seriously, how many additional car trips would this building create when residents are more likely to be walking or biking somewhere as much as or less than a car? If this were an office building, they may have a point about congestion since each floor would have 10 times as many people as a residential building, but not really.

Midtown DRC 999 Peachtree renovation

The design team previewed the renovations intended at sidewalk level at the south side of the building. This included upgrades to the main entry façade along Peachtree St. and interior lobby. The makeover of the rear plaza included a glass vestibule, fireplaces, new seating areas and landscaping. The DRC appreciated the retrofit based on the adjacent context and supported improved porosity of the rear plaza. In that spirit of public access and activation the DRC had various comments.

DRC Recommendations:
Lower the height of the fencing along Peachtree Place to 6’ or less per code requirements and maintain two points of similar ingress/egress from the rear courtyard to Peachtree Place.
Consider improved glass storefronts within the existing framework of the marble clad pilasters along each public façade.
Provide direct entry access from retail space #2 to the Peachtree St. sidewalk per code requirements.
Install overhead coverage for inclement weather along with flanking tables and chairs for visual interest and activity at the main Peachtree St. entry.
Replace the sidewalk pavers at each side of the recessed entry facing Peachtree St. with a standard concrete sidewalk consistent with Midtown standards.
Consider signage opportunities via blade signs along Peachtree St. for the future retailers.
Improve ADA access with push button activators at the main Peachtree St. entry and holistically enhance pedestrian connectivity to the rear adjacent hotel.

The Stitch

Some details related to The Stitch here:
https://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/news...downtown-atlanta-affordable-housing.html

Quote:
Local officials are working on a strategy to create more than 3,000 units of affordable housing in the area

A guide for earmarking 20% of all new residential units around The Stitch at affordable rates could be completed by the beginning of next year
Quote:
The Stitch.....would be owned by Atlanta and managed by a nonprofit.

Project leaders have raised about $16 million, Cebe said. He feels confident about securing enough dollars to break ground on the project in coming years, as the federal government has signaled its support for major investments aimed at reconnecting neighborhoods now divided by highways.

The process of selecting a final design and completing engineering assessments could start in 2025. Construction of the Stitch could start in 2026 with completion in 2032, though that will depend on funding reserves, Cebe said. Project leaders might choose to build the park in various phases while continuing fundraising efforts.

Under the phased approach, the first portion of The Stitch would open between Peachtree and Courtland streets in 2029. The second portion would run from Ted Turner Drive to Peachtree Street with completion in 2032. The final portion from Courtland Street to Piedmont Avenue would open in 2036.

Hopefully they will build the pylons and castings for the center median for the entire project all at once. Remembering the GT 5th street bridge, the outages required for the center median work was pretty disruptive to traffic flow and it would be good if they could do that all at once to try to limit disruption there. This should be a great project

I really hope this happens. I was all in on the Midtown cap, but the more i think about it the less i feel its feasible. Not that it physically can't be done, but i dont know if city leadership has what it takes. The Stitch however seems like a no brainer. No grading necessary. Just build the pylons and plop the cap on top to oversimplify. That area around the Stitch desperately needs development too and it would come pouring in if this becomes a reality. Here's hoping.

I agree. Stitch has both a way better chance of happening and way more transformative effects.

Midtown along Spring/Williams is already approaching full build-out even without the cap. But the stitch has tons of opportunity for major redevelopment and additional density, especially if the MARTA station (and civic center redevelopment) are well-integrated. It's pretty exciting to think of what Downtown could look like with the stitch on the north side and the gulch/south downtown on the southside fully redeveloped.

Planning permit filed for "the development of a three story, multi-family building with 38 affordable apartments on the property located at 898 Hank Aaron Dr, SE, Atlanta." In summerhill/peoplestown along the future BRT route and near the Beltline southside trail.

Planning permit filed for 62 Waverly in Inman Park to build townhomes on an existing unused alley.

In today's edition of "parking minimums are dumb," this applicant needed to file a planning permit to "seek a special exception to reduce the required additional parking space from 5 spaces to 0 spaces for the construction of 3 pickleball courts."

Planning permit filed for the Skate Escape building at 12th and Piedmont. Finally some progress on this one.

Permit filed for renovation of 103 Peachtree in downtown. "Second story units the existing second floor is to be renovated. The front is to re the same except brick will be cleaned and regrouted."

Kinda wish they'd swap phase 2 and 3. I am not even sure it is a good idea to cap between Peachtree and West Peachtree. The MARTA station is kind of designed around being a bridge. You would lose the view from both the MARTA platform and Peachtree. The juxtaposition of the historic buildings and the freeway below is also interesting in a way that it isn't in the rest of the blocks they want to cap.

I do think that the Pine Street exit needs to be removed, though. Williams and Spring, too. Maybe they could turn the tunnel at the Techwood-Spring connector into a freeway exit instead.

All things considered, the view from a transit station is the last thing that should be considered when looking at a development deal and/or good urbanism. I'd gladly give up any views from this station to make it a truly good one for the neighborhood.

If the GaDOT ever wanted to spend big on highways they'd eliminate the grady curve and put the connector straight under downtown. Eliminate most of the highway that's effing up the area and get ride of Freedom Parkway, turn that into housing, heck maybe even a new transit line. BUT, removing any highway infrastructure isn't in their DNA, including closing exits.

I think it would actually be cool if the connecter were capped and the view from the MARTA platform looked down only onto the interstate in the tunnel below. Feels very big city.

But connecting the big park to civic center station (which, at some point, ought to be renamed) seamlessly should be one of the main goals imo. Civic center suffers greatly from being stuck in the middle of a nearly 1,000' long block. Peachtree to West Peachtree is the main event here.

And the historic buildings (esp medical arts) are in need of redevelopment to be saved. A stitch project would make this a lot more likely.
