The corner building is quite similar (in design, with an additional storey) to the one that was demolished on the site of The Smithe across the street,
and a new podium would better open up the Smithe frontage for retail (although fewer windows means less vandalism).

The wood style cladding got my attention
Driving into Coquitlam yesterday and saw this building for the first time at Lougheed and Brunette, thinking this is a unique bldg.
Maybe it's a new trend or the same architect and or builder.

City of Vancouver proposes new site for controversial DTES street market

By Simon Little Global News Posted March 10, 2023 9:02 pm Updated March 10, 2023 9:45 pm

Vancouver’s controversial Downtown Eastside street market could soon have a new home.

The market’s current site at 26 E Hastings is slated for redevelopment by BC Housing, and the City of Vancouver has proposed demolishing a dilapidated two-storey heritage building at 123 E Hastings, across the street and one block east, to act as a new site.

According to the city’s development application, the new site would be temporary and have space for 30 to 35 vendors, two toilet facilities, tents and a site office and storage container.

The city proposes having the market open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This whole thing just blows my mind. Now we have a fencing operation selling stolen goods and the City is calling it a "market", and as opposed to thieves they are called "Vendors" ... crazy times is there anything more we can do to promote crime?

You should post the Loma clip to the Suburban Updates thread.

**********

New scheme to demolish a heritage building -
offer the site for a temporary drug market.

PS - looks like a nicer facade than a lot of preserved heritage facades (with cornice).

That place has been a blight issue for years. It's caught fire several times and the owner's been waiting get paid to walk away from it. Looks like he's finally getting cashed out.

That's great. Excess poles in the middle of sidewalks are terrible for wheelchairs and strollers.

If the developer sells them, it would seem that we do.

Maybe they'll be west side house owners on Granville or Dunbar selling out and downsizing so their big houses get redeveloped into 5-storey rental buildings.

That is certainly the line that Henriquez and Marcon were trying to spin in that article.

Are there any permanent residents in Rosellen or is it still a long term hotel?

It's been a hotel since 1984. Google not working again?

2030 Barclay from Dwell Magazine

Affordability aside, it looks like a great little new building.
