Initially, the design of this building seemed rather odd to me, but as it rises it is becoming better and better.

The aspects which seemed quirky about the design are becoming layers of finessed lines and shadings as it rises.

It seems like a culmination of so much and I feel a little sad that Jahn isn't here to see it. So much of his work had a sort of comic flamboyance to me and this building has a touch of

that in the diagonal cliff of the base, but there is a lightness in this which is beautiful and, surprisingly to me, makes the base and main tower feel simultaneously individual and integrated.

Essex on the Park -- er, "Sentral" -- is 620 ft. so I'd say you're right.

^ Keep in mind that in the last few photos, 1000M was significantly closer to the camera. If we look at this photo taken by gebs at a greater distance, 1000M seems to be not quite 600 ft yet, and that's good news because if we already think 1000M looks tall, it will look much taller when finished:

YES.

Though it didn't initially seem as odd to me as it sounds like it did to you, couldn't agree more with current assessment.

There's room for plenty of fultonized mediocrity in the West Loop and similar aesthetic missteps in plenty of other places...they can get lost amid the cityscape or blend into a sea of average.

But here, design matters. It really, really matters. With a site like this, a position on the skyline here, fronting the park, it's so important to get it right. And thus far, it looks to have met the challenge exceptionally well.

Excellent observations. I was also drawn to the diagonal cliff coming from the base. The design element sort of surprised and delighted me as I had never noticed it before.

This makes the most sense to me. Anchor points for rigging/bosuns chair etc.

I don't think it will be lighting. Any lighting this building has will likely be limited to amenity and mechanical floors.

Wish they would have clad the base and main tower with the same spandrel panel material (even if that meant putting the cheaper paneling on the base instead of the stainless steel). Would have kept the emphasis of the composition on the contrasting forms of the lower and upper masses; as it’s looking now, the two different metal panels make it look more like two different buildings thrown together.

I suspect that the base was designed to try to maintain the feel of the long-standing wall of smaller (by Chicago standards) buildings along Michigan Avenue which has always been

a wonderful frame for Grant Park and the Loop. By using different effects on the base and the taller part of the tower, it almost feels as if the taller part is not on Michigan Avenue.

I have always loved that wall of older buildings when viewed from Lake Shore Drive and I want to believe that Jahn's design is trying to cleverly honor that wonderful wall while

simultaneously breaking into it. Maybe I'm fooling myself, but I want to believe he appreciated that historical vista.
