Holy shit....this is a MASSIVE blow to Rideau Centre. It's almost like their clientele can't afford $400 sweaters when Walmart is selling anti-perspirant for $11.99 and Loblaws is charging $9.49 for the smallest size of aluminum foil.

I guess the biggest surprise is that it has taken this long.

That will fill up in a heartbeat. The Rideau Centre space is just a total disaster. I can't think of a single thing that could occupy that space.

Considering the recent uptick in homelessness and crime in the mall/area, I highly doubt anyone is even looking to occupy the space.

The ball is with Sutcliffe.

Never understood why they opened in Canada. And especially outside Toronto and Vancouver to begin with.

It was a weird decision. The Eaton location was always busy but that was likely down to it being a walk-through for the main level between Dundas and the rest of Eaton Centre.

The space is too big for Uniqlo - I thought that store was supposed to enter into the former Victoria's Secret space?

I'm not saying the Uniglo would take the whole space. Realistically what store would take up that much space these days? They'll have to divide that space for sure.

Nordstrom is shutting down in Canada, as it struggles to achieve profitability

Nordstrom said Thursday that it will exit the Canadian market, shuttering all its locations as the company struggles to reach profitability in Canada.
The company, which operates six Nordstrom stores and seven discount Nordstrom Rack stores in Canada, made the announcement alongside the release of its fourth quarter results. Nordstrom Canada employs approximately 2,500 people.
"We entered Canada in 2014 with a plan to build and sustain a long-term business there. Despite our best efforts, we do not see a realistic path to profitability for the Canadian business," Nordstrom chief executive officer Erik Nordstrom said in a statement.
"This decision will simplify our structure, intensify focus on our growth and profitability goals and position us to create greater value for our shareholders."
Nordstrom Canada said it obtained an initial order for creditor protection under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) on Thursday to facilitate the winding down of its Canadian operations. The company said its e-commerce website will cease operations on Thursday, and that the in-store wind down is expected to be completed by late June.
The exit from the Canadian market is expected to result in a $400 million hit to Nordstrom's 2023 net sales, but a small boost to the bottom line.

Yet another hit to downtown Ottawa. Downtown has been gradually eviscerated since the pandemic. Sad

Sad, but I'm not necessarily surprised.

I worked there when it first opened at Rideau. Sad, but I'm not necessarily surprised.

I think The Bay might be next, and that will hit all of the major malls in the region pretty hard.

Nordstrom closing down in Canada, shuttering all 13 stores
Roughly 2,330 people to lose their jobs

Pete Evans · CBC News
Posted: Mar 02, 2023 4:44 PM EST | Last Updated: 3 hours ago

Nordstrom Inc. says it is winding down its Canadian operations and closing all 13 of its stores in the country.

The company, which launched in Canada in 2014, has six Nordstrom stores and seven Nordstrom Rack locations.

All stores will close and all the company's staff in Canada — roughly 2,330 people — will lose their jobs, the company said Thursday.

In court filings, the company says Nordstrom's Canadian business has lost money every single year it has been in operation.

"We entered Canada in 2014 with a plan to build and sustain a long-term business there. Despite our best efforts, we do not see a realistic path to profitability for the Canadian business," the company said in a statement.

Pending approval of the court monitor overseeing the wind-down under the Companies Creditors' Arrangement Act, liquidation sales at all existing locations will start around March 20.

Gift cards will be honoured until the end of liquidation for in-store purchases. No new gift cards can be purchased after Thursday.

The company's Nordstrom.ca site has stopped sales effective immediately. Any orders placed online before Thursday will be filled, but no new orders will be processed online. After March 17, all sales are final and returns and exchanges will no longer be permitted.

Retail consultant Doug Stephens says the move suggests that Nordstrom is just the latest department store chain to find its business model being squeezed on all sides — by discount brands from below and luxury brands from above, along with the rise of e-commerce.

"It's no secret that the department store channel has been in, let's call it, a pretty fragile state," he told CBC News.

It's the second major U.S. chain to pull the plug on its Canadian operations in a matter of weeks, after Bed Bath & Beyond announced in February it would close all of its 65 stores in Canada.

After years of suffering a drag on profits, Stephens says Nordstrom's U.S. parent is looking at the prospect of a recession in its home market and taking the opportunity to cut out anything that isn't adding cash to its bottom line.

"Clearly it's a move on Nordstrom's part to reconsolidate — tighten things down — and prepare for what could be a very difficult year ahead," he said.

Like Disney gone before,
and now the benches in front of Tim Hortons, gone so the homeless not sleep there.
You want to sit there waiting for your friends? Nope.
