The Thistle Curling Club at 280 Burnell will be selling its land and building and merging into the Deer Lodge Curling Club.
Unless someone buys it with the intention of starting a curling club, the facility that had previously housed the Valour CC from 1948 until a merger in 2007, will be demolished. The Thistle brand, which was founded in 1887, will live on within the Deer Lodge facility, though operations will be combined.

Damn man that’s a huge bummer, however with the 6 storey mixed use building going up behind Shoppers currently, that land will be prime and there could end up being a nice little medium-density strip taking over that whole block from Portage to St Paul/Einarson within a decade.

I’m really surprised the big swath of land behind the former Meineke garage has been for sale for so long and not scooped up for a project like the one that went up on Good(?) St near Colony Square.

Sals has great burgers, milkshakes and wafer pie. You can also pick up a box of fresh patties along with everything else (including Sals sauce) at the commissary. Great for barbecuing.

Kind of like golf in that respect, tends to skew older but still lots of younger players. It's a good life sport to encourage people to take up, partly for the social element. Golf is holding its own but curling and especially bowling seem to be dropping off, though.

At any rate, I hope that the remaining curling clubs in town can make a go of it. It's a nice dimension to winter life and it would be a shame if we lost ours the way that a lot of other Canadian cities have.

Back then Route 90 was absolutely part of the planned inner ring road network that never happened. Did you just make up Truth and Reconciliation Way or is that thing now?

The Gunnlaugsons (local curling dynasty) are my best pals and second family since childhood and they say there are more club mergers coming. Fiscal sustainability for the clubs is a major issue and has been for some time now.

^ Especially with many of them being in aging buildings that are approaching the end of their lifespans. I guess with proper resources you can maintain even the oldest curling club but I'm sure it's a struggle when your membership base is dwindling.

I am not surprised to hear that we may see more consolidation of clubs. Winnipeg does still have a lot of them... sort of a legacy of the days when you'd see over a thousand teams playing in the MCA bonspiel.

Maybe once upon a time long ago Sals made all their stuff fresh now it is definitely coming from their commissary frozen and then cooked in store. You can even buy the different items from their store frozen and end up with a very similar product at home.

Bringing the thread back to construction, Rossmere Country club closed down their curling rink in 2018 because they could not afford to replace their damaged galvanized floor pipes after the floor slightly shifted

They now use the old curling hall for virtual golf tournaments in the winter, and rent it out for other things. I heard at one point a few years ago they had rented it out for roller derby

Back in the days of a cigarette in one hand a beer in another waiting for your turn to sweep ice, curling got people out of the house when it was black and white TV with two channels, no internet and when people would actually socialize!

Lagimodiere is not mainly limited access. Mainly limited access would be a road like the Yellowhead in Edmonton. Lagimodiere is really not that different from Pembina or Kenaston (south of the rail tracks).

Route 90 and Lagimodiere were never part of the plan for the Inner City ring road. People in North Kildonan have known at least since the 70s exactly where CPT was being planned in their area. I've seen the original plans numerous times.
