Some of the vacated locations might actually be a good fit for an Aldi/Lidl entry into Canada. Heavy emphasis on some as we all know foreign entrants are going to be wary of another Target-size gaffe.

But there's some precedent, at least. Save-on converted a former Home Outfitters box in Langford and it seems to be doing all right.

The stores might be about the right size, but despite constant speculation I don't think either Aldi or Lidl have indicated an intention of entering the Canadian market?

Broadway would be a good location for Nordstrom Rack. They must want to open a store in the city.

I remember reading a few years ago that Aldi had actually come to Canada and set up an office in Ontario while they explored opening in Canada, but they shut down that office and abandoned the idea to come to Canada.

Edit: i found the article from 2018

Quote:
In fact, several years ago, Lidl did come to Canada and set up an office in Mississauga. The company was hiring staff and exploring real-estate sites for stores. Much to everyone’s surprise, Lidl suddenly decided to close its office, lay off staff and delay its launch. Perhaps the company saw that it would be more beneficial to launch first in the US, since the country is less consolidated, with larger urban centres and a much denser population.

A Nordstrom Rack would be great on Broadway, the location hasn't been great but with Skytrain coming so close in a few years that would help.

Where are all the locations?

Richmond - near walmart on Alderbrudge - forget the name of the shopping centre it's in - would also make a good location for Nordstrom Rack
Coquitlam - Lougheed Highway shares parking with Toys R Us
Langley - Across from Willowbrook Mall
Vancouver - Broadway near Burrard

Where else do they have locations?

Also does this closure affect their Buy Buy Baby stores? I think there is one in Langley attached or next to the BB&B

Morgan De Toi is coming back to Canada or opening in Canada, but they used to have a few stores here in Vancouver maybe 20 or so years ago, I remember the store on Robson Street (1218 Robson), it stood out for me cause I went to London in 2002 and there were Morgan De Toi stores on all the high streets.

French Fashion Brand Ba&Sh To Expand Into Vancouver With A 1st-In-North-America Concept Store

By Craig Patterson
Date: February 6, 2023

Quote:
French women’s fashion brand ba&sh is expanding into the Vancouver market this spring with its first store that will be located in the city’s downtown core. It will be the fourth location for ba&sh in Canada after the brand opened stores in Toronto and Montreal during the pandemic.

The Vancouver ba&sh storefront will be contained within a 660 square foot retail space at 925 West Georgia Street at the base of the Cathedral Place office tower. The new ba&sh will be located strategically across the street from the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver which is home to flagship stores for Gucci, Dior and Louis Vuitton. The ba&sh store will replace French jeweller Chopard which last year relocated to a beautiful new space nearby on Alberni Street.

With the exception of the original Rack in downtown Seattle, I think their business model is to ensure that Rack's are nowhere close to a Nordstrom store. There's a reason why metro Vancouver's Rack is in Langley.

Calgary, Toronto and Ottawa have Nordstroms/Racks that are 10 minutes apart.

Walking distance on the same street in Toronto even.

I think the reason the Rack is in Langley is because that's the only place they could find a space for it.

BBB on Broadway is 38k square feet.. perfect for a Rack. Canadian stores are 35-38k square feet.

Oakridge, Brentwood, Metrotown, Lougheed would make more sense. Seems like the last place Nordstroms would look for a Rack location regardless of the sq feet of the space.

Yeah, I was just in Chicago and the Rack location in the Loop was about a 10-15 minute walk from the full-line store in River North. I think it depends more on each market.

Northgate mall in Seattle had a full Nordstrom and a Nordstrom Rack store in the same mall. With the rebuilt mall though only the Rack survived, They closed Nordstrom down.

BonLook shutting all BC and Alberta stores. The one in Pacific Centre was beside Dyson and seemed like it was there for all but 10 minutes.

It would seem that my understanding of distancing discount stores from mainline retail is outdated. And dang it, I've actually been to downtown Racks in NYC and Chicago, and had totally forgotten.

There used to be a reason why outlet malls used to be 1-2 hours away from city centres, but I guess not so much any more.

There's also a Nordstrom about 20 minutes away downtown, right by Westlake transit station.

There has been a ton of consolidation in that industry in the past few years; it may not always be apparent to consumers because of different brand names, but there are large players acquiring smaller optometrists' offices and keeping the original brand name. So chances are, your "local" optometrist may be part of a much larger chain.

In the case of Specsavers, they've chosen to use that brand name wherever they've made acquisitions.
