Absolutely, but it is included in rent to the landlord. I just don't believe that all of these small landlords along this stretch of broadway would actually pass on the credit from the city. Although more paperwork, the city could issue grants in the amount of the tax to the business, this would also avoid LL sitting hoping for the moon for their empty properties did not receive this benefit as well.

The LL are already experiencing increases in their land values YoY along this stretch. I have also heard a few rumors of LL's asking for large increases on leases that have come due in this area. With that said, I would expect (as long as these small investors are willing to sell) all of these buildings will be demolished in the near term. Would be nice to see some vibrancy come to broadway between oak and main via restaurants/cafes etc. It was the outdoor shops that kept some sort of life in the small restaurants between main and cambie as there was a decent amount of employees going out for beers etc after work.

The article didn't say they were relocating. Considering the number of hot pot restaurants near Metrotown I would be inclined to believe they will keep both spots.

it says this Kingsway location will be the third location for them and they are very close to their second location. The Richmond location is always packed.

Cactus Club Coquitlam is now open, it opened Jan 24. It feels a little weird and alone in a giant parking lot at the moment but the other Coquitlam location often has a lineup so the peoples out here loves it.

Looks like West Broadway & Macdonald is getting a new restaurant/music venue, The Painted Ship, from the team behind The Heatley:

The TripleOs signage was waay too small.
Hopefully CBC bureaucrats allow bigger ones for Popeye's.

I actually went for a walk the other day along Kent Ave and saw a crowd of people heading there. I had no clue what it was so I decided to follow the crowd. After I saw that it's just an eatery where you can get sick and catch disease I swiftly did a 180 degree turn and took off...
Really amazed how this place could justify such an article.

Look at the restaurant closure list and I think you need to re-evaluate what is clean and what is dirty.

If this is your choice to eat food that is covered in rat pee and shit then it is your choice. I made my choice before entering the building, this is a case when I judge the book by its cover.

These are some comets from Costal Health reports:

Premises has signs of rodent activity.
The premises is not maintained in a sanitary condition.
Owner/Operator does not hold a valid FOODSAFE or equivalent certificate.
Temperature records are not being used to monitor critical limits.
Food is stored in a manner that promotes cross contamination.

To be fair that was over four years ago and probably some changes were required of the place before they could be allowed to continue operating with a follow up inspection to confirm. I've had food poisoning from much fancier establishments. Not that I'm stumping for the place, the prices are bananas for how popular the place seems to be and it's definitely way below the threshold of a Guardian article.

VancouverIsAwesome reports that Moderne Burger has shut down. A shame they relocated to that bleak stretch of West Broadway from their original kits home (torn down for the instantly forgettable Monument condo).

IDK, but it's simultaneously a bad location and a good one. Bad because it's off the main streets of Burrard and Hastings so it doesn't get the foot traffic that Joey or Cactus do (and it doesn't even address Cordova St that well). But good because it is in a neighbourhood with a lot of hotel guests and wealthy residents, has the potential for a pretty killer patio (shaded almost all day though), has ample parking, and is steps from the Seawall, Convention Centre, and Skytrain.

I always forgot that place was there. I wonder if the phenomenon outlined below is playing out here as well:

Big city restaurants and bars are missing office workers’ spending on Mondays and Fridays
PUBLISHED FRI, FEB 24 20238
Noah Sheidlower

Many restaurants and hotels in city downtowns are seeing sales come back to pre-pandemic levels — but only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

In cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta, the three-day in-person work week has posed challenges for hospitality businesses. With fewer workers in offices on Mondays and Fridays — which for some businesses were their strongest sales days — many businesses have been forced to shift work schedules or launch initiatives to pull in customers at the start and end of the week.

Amali, a restaurant on the edge of midtown Manhattan, is pulling in as little as a quarter of midweek business on Mondays and Fridays, said managing partner James Mallios.

Hotels are also seeing slower starts and ends to the week for business travelers...
