Charlottetown Skyline 2023 & 2050

It's been years since a tower crane was sighted in the downtown core in Charlottetown and I doubt there will be for the next 25 years. The block against development due to the Lot 500 zoning bylaws is crushing development and density in the downtown. I doubt we'll have any in the coming years under the tenure of this reelected mayor.

P.E.I. will see more action on housing 'once the snow's gone,' says minister.

CBC NEWS PEI

"MacKay said he has been in discussions with municipalities about creating a higher density target for residential development, meaning more multi-unit buildings and fewer single-family dwellings"

MORE HERE 》 https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/prince-edward-island/pei-housing-crisis-matthew-mackay-1.6730840

Try building 7-10+ storey buildings in Charlottetown! That will help reduce sprawl, get people living downtown, help businesses, reduce traffic and more. As they say, "build it and they will come!" But we are speaking about Charlottetown aren't we! I can see the NIMBY lineup at the IRAC office now down the street and around the corner!

I wish them luck!!

Charlottetown Curling Club may be moving to Stratford

CBC NEWS PEI

"Charlottetown curlers may have a new place to throw rocks in a couple of years as discussions for a new rink in Stratford move forward....."

MORE HERE 》 https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/prince-edward-island/pei-charlottetown-curling-club-1.6731292

Charlottetown, the only provincial capital in Canada not to have a curling venue. Ridiculous! The hockey moguls on council can put their heads together to build new hockey rinks but screw curling. It's certainly obvious!!

Charlottetown puts plans for third fire hall on hold

CBC NEWS PEI

‘Three stations just adds another station to maintain, another station to possibly staff’

MORE HERE 》https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/prince-ed...wn-firefighters-fire-hall-city-1.6735140

Well, here is proof our city council isn't in touch with the changes taking place in our city. They allow sprawl but won't back it up with any fire service. Total incompetence!!: ???:
I hope the public will be up in arms about this. If anyone dies from a fire in West Royalty and area we'll know who to point our fingers at. I'm sure it'll impress the insurance bureaus as they are the ones who recommended that it be built.

Again! This is getting crazy, they’ve been planning on building this for like 10+ years!

After reading it in depth, it is the fire chief that wants to kill the idea. The mayor and most counselors support it.
May I remind Chief Mayme, before amalgamation, there were three fire stations in Charlottetown. There was Charlottetown, Parkdale and Sherwood fire departments. With 4-5x more people in Charlottetown now, why would you think three stations wouldn't be justified. I would love to hear his rebuttal
on this.

The city doesn’t need a third station, it’s needs its two stations better positioned. Downtown can’t be moved because of the nature of the structures in the area, so that leaves station 2 to be moved.

Where would the city even find 40 more volunteers? They’re constantly recruiting to keep their numbers up now.

Anyway, like the Chief said, there has never been a report that recommended a third station in Charlottetown, politicians came up with that idea. They need to let their subject matter experts do their job. The Chief wants to new underwriters study done, that’s where these questions will get the real answers / recommendations…

Where would you propose they move it to? East Royalty and West Royalty are both expanding rapidly. Station 2 services Sherwood, Parkdale, East Royalty and Hillsborough Park. The new station would service West Royalty, Winsloe, and the industrial parks and main retail area of the city.

The report recommended the new location to replace station 2, with station 1 boundaries being adjusted. Currently station 1 doesn’t goes east past Palmers Lane. You guys can armchair it, but I’m just going off of what the experts recommended. You guys could be right, which is why the chief wants a new underwriters fire survey performed before anything moves forward, one hasn’t been done in nearly 20 years. But to build a third station, buy all new trucks, and try finding 40 staff/volunteers all because council played politics and didn’t want to close a station? That’s the the way to do it. Councillors shouldn’t be in the business of randomly opening fire halls, they should act on their subject matter experts’ recommendations by approving funds.

I think you will see a lot more pre made buildings going up around here. The building they put up on Fitzroy st last year also went up pretty fast.

Bed Bath & Beyond
Bed Bath & Beyond's Canadian operations are going out of business, according to a court filing on Friday, two days after the retailer quickly raised cash to stave off a U.S. bankruptcy.

The Canadian division, which operates 54 Bed Bath & Beyond stores and 11 buybuy BABY stores, is insolvent, the filing posted on the website of consultancy Alvarez & Marsal showed. Alvarez & Marsal has been appointed as a monitor of the business in the Canadian court case.

The Canadian business does not have the "capacity or ability to independently effect a recapitalization or restructuring of the Canadian operations without access to cash and the support" from the parent company and its lenders, according to the filing.

As of Jan. 31, the company employed approximately 387 full-time employees and 1,038 part-time workers in connection with its retail operations across Canada, according to the filing.

Bed Bath & Beyond Canada Ltd., was granted an initial order for creditor protection by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice Friday under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act, according to Alvarez & Marsal.

Bed Bath & Beyond Canada had a net loss of $99.5 million for the nine-month period ending Nov. 26, 2022, the documents show.

As of Nov. 26, Bed Bath & Beyond Canada's assets were valued at around $480.1 million, the documents show, while its total liabilities were worth around $429.7 million.

Buybuy BABY Canada to shut 11 stores
Adjusted earnings for the past three financial years were negative, and the Canadian arm of the retail giant contributed significant negative adjusted earnings margins to the parent company, the documents said.

U.S. parent company Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. has shut scores of its stores across the country and warned last month that it may need to file for bankruptcy protection as it was unable to pay back its loans.
